Föhn wind - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
As the wind descends to lower levels on the leeward side of the mountains, the air temperature increases adiabatically as it comes under greater atmospheric pressure creating strong, gusty, warm and dry winds.
Winds of this type are called "snow-eaters" for their ability to make snow melt rapidly.
Föhn winds are notorious among mountaineers in the Alps, especially those climbing the Eiger, for whom the winds add additional difficulty in ascending an already difficult peak.

Diablo wind - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Diablo wind is a modern term for the hot, dry offshore wind from the northeast that typically occurs in the San Francisco Bay Area of Northern California during the Spring and Fall.
The name "Diablo wind" may have been coined from the observation that the wind blows into the inner Bay Area from the direction of the Diablo Valley in adjacent Contra Costa County, and mindful of the fiery, sensationalist connotation inherent in "devil wind".
Unlike the Santa Ana wind which is a downslope wind ("föhn") draining air off the high deserts, the so-called Diablo wind originates from areas of strongly sinking air aloft, associated with the development of high atmospheric pressure inland following the passage of storms just north of California.

EBRPD Wildfire Problem Statement   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Diablo wind fires under the worst conditions of high wind speed, low humidity, and high temperature, move so quickly that positioning fire crews and obtaining air support for rapid containment and control may not be possible given current fuel levels.
We now know that firefighters may not be able to stop all Diablo Wind fires, and that several areas in the East Bay Hills can produce flame fronts that can't be controlled with water from hydrants, fire truck hoses, helicopter buckets, or with retardant drops from air tankers.....until the wind slows in the late afternoon.
However, during the prevalence of upper air winds of north to east directions, dynamic heating and drying of air descending from the mountains to the north and east creates exceptionally critical conditions in the zone, especially near the toes of leeward slopes.
