This is a sexploitation thriller but not all that bad, mainly because it is played somewhat tongue-in-cheek so that the plot absurdities might be overlooked in the interest of high camp, or at least in the interest of a mild diversion, and also because the women are diabolically diverting each in her own way.
This is a remake of Les Diaboliques (1955) starring Simone Signoret which I have not seen.
First of all, Diabolique is not a bad movie, it just doesn't deliver the suspense and atmosphere of the original masterpiece (Les Diaboliques).

Diabolique (1955) - A Review by David Nusair
More than anything, Diabolique perfectly defines the term "slow build." Director Henri-Georges Clouzot takes his time in setting up the story and indeed, it's around the 30-minute mark before anything of substance happens.
Though there are sporadic moments of dark humor (including the fate of poor schoolboy Moinet, who keeps insisting that he's talked to Michel), the film works best as a suspenseful and occasionally creepy nail-biter.
Diabolique doesn't move a mile-a-minute, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

 The Criterion Collection: Diabolique
After finishing Diabolique, heralded French director-screenwriter Henri-Georges Clouzot (1907—1977) confessed that all he had intended was to make a picture that would “amuse myself” and please a young girl who hid under the covers and asked her father to frighten her with a bedtime story.
As always, his film is strongly acted, strikingly paced for tension and suspense, and exhibits a perverse nastiness of character and environment that is oppressive and unsettling.
Diabolique is most definitely the work of an angry artist who spent several years of his adult life in sanitariums recovering from his illness but not his cynicism.

 Diabolique - Definition, explanation
Diabolique is a 1996 American film directed by Jeremiah S. Chechik and the American title of a 1955 French film (Les Diaboliques) directed by Henri-Georges Clouzot (U.K. title = The Fiends) based on the novel Celle qui n'était plus by Pierre Boileau and Thomas Narcejac.
The end credit contains an early example of an "anti-spoiler message", requesting the audience not to disclose the plot to others who have not seen the film.
The writers of the novel "Celle Qui N'Etait Plus", Pierre Boileau and Thomas Narcejac, are credited with early use, if not coinage, of the term film noir, which as also been used to describe Les Diaboliques.

 Diabolique (1996) : filmcritic.com Movie Review
The original Diabolique was one of the few examples of how thrillers ought to be made...and I figured Hollywood would find some way to screw up the remake.
It starts to get a little hairy when, after a seemingly perfect murder is pulled off, things start to seem not-so-perfect and questions over potential witnesses and the actual life-or-death-ness of Guy begin to surface.
Stone pulls off an excellently icy performance, reminding us why audiences like her so much, and Adjani, while maintaining a look of total surprise on her face for the whole film, is too innocently cute to think anything ill of.
