Takara Toys' 1980 Diaclone toyline were transforming vehicles and robots piloted by miniature, magnet-shoed figures spun off from the prior Microman toy line that were in turn called an Inch-Man.
Unlike Microman, which featured "full-scale" toys of its 10 centimeter tall alien cyborgs, the figures in Diaclone represented full-sized human (and enemy alien Waruder) pilots, and were in approximately 1/60th scale.
The Constructicons came from near the end of the series, at which point Takara was starting to abandon the Inch-Man pilot figures and being limited to the 1/60th scale.

Each Diaclone toy thus came with a little pilot figure (with magnetic feet), and many of the toys had cockpit areas for these figures to fit into (in case you were wondering why your Optimus toy had a chest that opened up to reveal a little seat inside).
The Diaclone toys also gave the Transformers line their first Triple Changer (Blitzwing), the two Autobot Jumpstarters, and the ever-popular Dinobots (originally created to help the Diaclone Taskforce fight off an army of dinosaurs plucked from the past by the Warudars).
In the original Diaclone, this mecha's name was Convoy, and the name survives today in the Japanese Transformers, where the Autobot with the personality and look of Optimus Prime is called Convoy to this day.

Microman 2005 Series - Exclusive Microman & Transformers
Diaclone shared much of the basis of late Microman design but the series was done on 1/60 scale with the "action-figure" only about an inch tall.
Diaclone was pretty much a "Micropolis-realized", something that Takara had long wanted to do for Microman but could not, due to the size of Microman figures.
Before 1983, most of the Diaclone and Microman toys featured futuristic designs, but that was all changed with the introduction of two new series - "Car Robot" for the Diaclone and "Micro Change" for the Microman.
