 dial
A dial is a generally a flat disk, often with numbers or similar markings on it, used for displaying the setting or output of a timepiece, radio or measuring instrument In telephony and telecommunications in connection with a telephone, a dial refers, in older telephones, to a rotating disk with 10 numbered finger holes.
The first commercial installation of a Telephone Dial accompanied the first commercial installation of a 99 line automatic telephone exchange in La Porte, Indiana in 1892, which was based on the 1891 Strowger patent designs.
When a particular numbered hole is rotated with the finger to a finger stop set at a specific point across the dial, then released, the dial mechanism rotates the dial back to its original position and transmits pulses down the telephone line according to the number of the hole selected.

Dial-A-Song - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Longtime listeners to Dial-a-Song have counted at least 500 distinct songs and variations recorded by They Might Be Giants, making them one of the most prolific rock bands in history.
They Might Be Giants (TMBG), Dial-A-Song consists of an answering machine with a tape of the band playing various songs.
It doesn't necessarily play their most popular work, however; some people call only to hear a promotional tape of a fake interview which compares TMBG's work to Nazi Germany.

It's just going to play one song for two weeks because my landlady is out of town and I'm out of town and it's too hard to organize someone to come into the building and change it everyday.
T: The songs you sing seem to be more issue-oriented, like "Your Racist Friend," whereas John's seem more nonsensical or absurdist, like "Particle Man." F: Well, those two examples certainly support your argument, but I think I've written some pretty nonsensical songs.
From this point on, most of the songs that are going to appear on our records will be new songs.

[fmSound] Reviews - They Might Be Giants "Dial-a-Song"
Named Dial-A-Song in honor of their quirky toll call dial-in phone number/marketing ploy that helped launch the band on the back of the Village Voice and still runs today, albeit undependably as it always ahs, out of the studio that used to be Giant John Flansburgh’s (the other half being John Linnell) apartment.
They Might Be Giants kick off their double-disc greatest hits anthology (given the length of most Giants&; song it can truly be called that) with their most well-known hit “Birdhouse in Your Soul.” Smartly, this gets such nonsense out of the way and gives the listener a chance to truly enjoy the gems that follow.
The anthology offers a nice mix of live pieces, classics, and newer songs old fans of the band may not yet be familiar with.

Swirlee » Dial-a-Song vs. Ugly PHP Hack
So now you can listen to all of the songs from DialASong.com in your favorite media player by clicking here.
You see, using the ever-handy Flash Decompiler (though now I realize Live HTTP Headers would have told me, too), I discovered that a list of all the songs is hidden in songs.txt (and their titles, oddly, in a separate file).
I thought, “why can’t I just hear all of the songs?” Thus another ugly PHP hack was born.

Apparently, a woman named Gloria was very confused after seeing an advertisement for Dial-A-Song, called the number, and heard a song.
The track is actually an excerpt of a phone call made to dial-a-song, when you could leave messages.
She then called someone she knew, supposedly unknowning that she was being recorded, and talked with him asking him to explain his theory of "how he can make money off this stuff, cause it don't make no sense".

i think dial-a-song (they might be giants' usually reliable message machine with a short but guaranteed mood-alteringly great song on it) is the thing that has been the #1 most consistent and unchanged in my address books through the years next to my grandparents's home phone and address in kankakee, IL.
anyway, i dialed dial-a-song and it just rang - there was nothing.

The rest of the songs are similarly pulled along by some unseen force, driven by an energy found in classic post-punk bands like Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 or Drunken Boat.
The Original has the better artwork, the same songs, and the bonus features on here are worthless anyway.
The release combines old tracks from Night on the Sun (an out-of-print vinyl-only EP), remixes, and outtakes from the The Moon and Antarctica sessions along with a couple new songs.

One of the songs that has really come together in the live show is "Drink!" and this recording gives you a taste of it's mad flavah.
This song was original recorded by the Sonics, one of the finest US "garage rock" combos from the '60s.

Due Sept. 3, "Dial-a-Song: 20 Years of They Might Be Giants," is named after the band's free call-in song service (718-387-6962), and largely culls tracks from TMBG's nine studio albums, along with a handful of soundtrack contributions, B-sides, alternate EP recordings, and three previously-unreleased live recordings.
Notable is the inclusion of the adult version of "Robot Parade"; a less menacing version of the song appears on the band's recently released Idlewild/Rounder children's album, "No!" ( see review), the title track of which is also included here.
Among those gems is a live version of "Stormy Pinkness" -- a song only previously available as a studio version on 1990's "Istanbul (Not Constaninople)" EP-- captured in Berlin in 1989.

The songs on their first few albums were usually pretty short as result of coming from their "dial-a-song-service".
They started their musical career by creating a "dial-a-song service", which was basically a phone number to call to listen to music on an answering machine!
Some of the songs you may have heard of are "Making Plans for Nigel", "Life Begins at the Hop", "Respectable Street", "Towers of London", "Senses Working Overtime" and "Dear God".

Turbula - Music - Review of "Dial-A-Song: 20 Years of They Might Be Giants"
When people initially heard that there was a box set named "Dial-a-song" released, most of them assumed that it would be a rarities collection of the songs actually recorded for this service, but since just about every song they have ever done has been born from it, the name makes sense and is accurate.
The "Dial-A-Song: 20 Years of They Might Be Giants" box set is a testament to those 20 years, and one that is quite up to the task of compiling a complete and accurate representation of what They Might Be Giants are about.
For the TMBG fan who has been with the band throughout the years, this album offers little in the way of songs they may not have heard before, but I guarantee there will be sounds within the songs they already know and love, that they had no idea were there.

Dial A Song néven a pre-grunge úttörői egy olyan forródrótot működtettek Brooklynban, melynek tárcsázásával a rajongók énekes és hangszerelt üzeneteket hagytak- ezek képezték a dalok alapjait.

 [ T ] titles at Aquarius Records
There's 52 songs in all including a handful of live versions as well as their contributions to the television and movie world (for Austin Powers and Malcolm In The Middle respectively).
They kick it all off with a triple whammy of "Birdhouse In Your Soul," "Ana Ng," and "Don't Let's Stop", but the running order of the songs from there on is somewhat puzzling.
The long-awaited and actually finished for quite a while Thingy album finds the equally long-awaited post-Heavy Vegetable band compressing the Built To Spill indie-rock-epic into one-and-a-half minute pop songs with lots of jangly guitars, off kilter time signatures, girl/boy vocal harmonies, and a songwriting ability that can only be qualified as splendidly nifty.

JF: We also do a Leslie Gore song called "Maybe I Know," which is really a kind of torch song for us, but we don't do too many covers really.
DM: Ana Ng, the first single off of Lincoln, would have been pretty tough to play with the band, is "They'll Need a Crane" (the song played on Letterman) going to be the next single?
DM: The song I was hoping for as single #2 of Lincoln was "Purple Toupee."

On a whim, I called Dial-a-Song for the first time ever just now (I know, what kind of TMBG fan am I??), and actually got through on the first try.
But at least there’s DialASong.com (oh, and sleep) to keep me busy until I can get through again.
But about 10 seconds into the song it just cut off.

Comprised of 3 new studio tracks and 21 live tracks taken from TMBG radio shows -- including a 7-song cycle dedicated to a certain '70s simian sci-fi film series (Planet of the Apes), "Severe Tire Damage," which will be released on August 11, finds the band exploring new avenues of eclecticism.

The songs appear as tracks 18-24 on Severe Tire Damage, after live renditions of such better-known TMBG songs as "Birdhouse in Your Soul" and "Particle Man." Each of the "Apes" cuts is named after or corresponds to a film in the series and finds the band taking a different musical tack.
In addition, the suite features the non-corresponding cuts "This Ape's for You" and "Love Theme From 'Planet of the Apes.' " "We really were interested in doing songs about the different films in the 'Planet of the Apes' series, but we didn't know what all the movies were called," Linnell said.

They have written some cryptic songs recently, but this type of song doesn't seem to be quite as common as it was in the earlier years.
I'm not sure if I have a skewed view of the genius of TMBG lyrics, but it seems to me that with FS and the new songs on STD, Their songs are losing their lyrical crypticness.
Most all the songs have very deep meaning in them and they are very intelligent musically and lyrically (which is where they get compared to TMBG in my opinion).
