Topic: Dialectology

Good Practice Guide | Subject Centre for Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies
The critics argued, firstly, that dialectology should not just be interested in the very small proportion of the population who were old, rural and male, but also include the young, women and those living in towns and cities.
Dialectology is now addressing these concerns and some have embarked on a dialectology of mobility (Trudgill 1986), investigating communities which are (or were, recently) largely made up of non-natives (such as New Towns (e.g.
Dialectology is moving, therefore, from an analysis of the old, rural and static to a focus on the new, urban and mobile (see Britain 2001 for further discussion).

 DIALECTOLOGY
Dialectology as an academic subfield of the discipline of linguistics developed in the 19th century, together with the comparative-historical study of Indo-European, to which especially the study of Old Iranian contributed considerably.
Confined to the Central dialects, but of general import for the study of Iranian dialectology, especially in terms of its inclusion of socio-linguistic issues, is the study by Krahnke, which includes numerous maps and identifies two intersecting directions of isoglottic waves.
One such neglected study is social affiliation, which often involves diglossia, i.e., the use of different varieties or styles of a dialect or language, as well as bilingualism and multilingualism, characterized by a speaker using different languages in different social contexts, or language switch, and language loss, all contributing to linguistic diversity and groupings.

Delineation and description in dialectology: the case of perfective I'm in Lumbee English
The differences in orientation between linguistics and dialectology become obvious when one compares linguistic description and dialect delineation.
Dialectology strives to uncover a full range of examples of a variant so as to fully describe, document, and explain its use, including the cognitive and behavioral process underlying it development and use.
The use of I'm among the Lumbees is presented as an illustration of this process in dialectology.

More recently, however, interest has shifted to urban speech, and sociolinguists have correlated linguistic variables with other variables such as age, social class, sex and ethnic background.
Dialectology not only provides a thorough exposition of these two approaches - their histories, methodologies and significant results, drawn from studies of a wide range of languages - but for the first time also integrates them within a single conceptual framework as two aspects of the same discipline.
The authors argue that dialectology can thus make an important contribution to general linguistic theory and in particular answer questions about variability in language, which has in the past too often been assigned peripheral or accidental status.
