Rivers, Streams and Wetlands - River Health Assessed According to AUSRIVAS
The term 'river health' is similar to describing human health, as it provides an overall assessment of the health of rivers and streams.
The better rivers and streams were generally from catchments with large proportions of native vegetation such as Scott, Bakers Gully, Echunga, Brownhill, Sixth and Jacob creeks, the rural section of the Little Para River, parts of the North Para River and most of the main channel of the Onkaparinga River.
Rivers and creeks in the region tend to flow episodically in response to occasional and irregular rains.

The Diamantina River is the most important of these, originating in western Queensland and providing regular but often minor fillings of Lake Eyre.
The third major river system is Cooper Creek and, while it is the largest of the rivers in the region, its flows seldom reach as far downstream as Lake Eyre.
Like most of the rivers and creeks in the region, they consist of isolated waterholes that are filled during irregular rains and floods, and dry completely during extended dry periods.

Flood Warning System for the Diamantina River
The vast Diamantina River catchment is located in south west Queensland and covers an area of approximately 119,000 square kilometres.
Historical flood heights for all river stations in the Diamantina River Floodwarning network, as shown on the map, are available from the Bureau of Meteorology upon request.
At each flood warning river height station, the severity of flooding is described as minor, moderate or major according to the effects caused in the local area or in nearby downstream areas.

 Dryland Rivers policy document
These rivers differ from those in temperate zones, particularly in the unpredictable variability of their climatic and hydrological regimes, and in the physical, chemical and biological characteristics that depend on these regimes.
Appropriate management of these rivers is critical to ensure a sustainable and wise use of their resources, and to conserve their extraordinary values.
We do know enough to say that they function differently in important ways from rivers in more humid zones, but their extreme variability over time and the size of the major systems mean that many years of study will be required to develop a substantial understanding of their ecology.

Research into contemporary fluvial and aeolian process interactions along dryland environments are rare.In Australia, wind erosion is a significant environmental and economic problem and its inland rivers may be linked with wind erosion in response to alluvial sediment supplies on their high floodplains fueling major dust storms.
(1999) although highly respected in regards to high floodplain environments of inland rivers being the main zone of fluvial-aeolian interaction, once again highlights the issue of scale as the study was carried out at the local scale.
Furthermore, there have been few estimates of dust deposition inputs to dryland river systems despite their positive and negative implications such as, essential aquatic nutrient supply during low flow stages and river algae choking or increased sediment loads.

The Wilderness Society - Protecting Wild Rivers
In 1992 a definition was developed that identified a wild river as one in which the river flowed in its natural state and where the biological, hydrological and geomorphological processes have not been significantly altered by modern or colonial society.
After all, rivers are continuums and so protecting one small intact section will not guarantee the long-term health of either that part or of the entire river.
Wild rivers are particularly important in the maintenance of a number of basic ecological functions such as nutrient cycling, energy flows and the breakdown of toxins.
