Some examples include the Diametric drive, the Pitch drive, the Bias drive, the Alcubierre drive, the Disjunction drive, and the Differential sail.
The pitch drive is a diametric drive which uses the principle of a disjoint field (as in the disjunction drive) to eliminate the need for the field to be generated on the spacecraft itself.
The bias drive is a pitch drive that functions by altering the gravitational constant G in front of and behind the craft.

Drive assembly having an improved sun gear mounting - Patent 4191073
An output sprocket is carried on a first carrier of the drive assembly to be driven from the drive shaft by means of a gear assembly including a plurality of sun gears and planetary gears.
It has heretofore been conventional to provide a drive gear assembly including a plurality of sun gears and planetary gears in the final drive of a vehicle, such as a tractor, wherein an input driver shaft driven by the vehicle engine is connected to an output sprocket for driving the track of the vehicle.
The present invention comprehends an improved drive assembly wherein the second sun gear is rotatably carried by the housing and locked for rotation with the drive shaft by means permitting the second sun gear to move with the housing under the twisting loads applied thereto by the track.

Method of molding unitary roller of homogeneous material for tape cartridge - US Patent 5961905   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
A drive roller for a belt-driven tape cartridge is molded of composite polymeric material in a single step to include outer segment and inner segment integrally formed together with a radial web segment between the outer and inner segments to provide highly concentric operating surfaces on the outer segment and in the inner segment.
Electrical conductivity throughout the molded drive roller is provided by including in the composite material a quantity of carbon powder, and selective shrinkage of the composite material during cooling from molding temperatures provides desirable bearing surface within the inner bore through the inner segment.
The drive roller thus serves as the intermediate coupling between a rotating capstan shaft or roller in a tape drive unit and the belt which then contacts the outer layers of tape moving between reels.

Reaction mass drives have functional characteristics determined by the exhaust velocity and the maximum mass-flow rate.
The diametric drive has the drawback of needing highly detectable point sources ahead and behind the ship, making it unsuitable for stealthy approaches and maybe vulnerable to damage to the source generators.
The bias drive can produce higher velocities with less accelerations, but the central singularity is hard to manage and might under certain circumstances become dangerously unstable.

 Drive Sails
The brief renaissance of drive sail ships in the Inner Sphere ended in tyeh early 2nd millenium, when the diametric drive became possible.
Drive sails are usually visible on close range through bluish Cherenkov radiation from particles passing through their surface layer and into regions of Casimir vacua.
Drive sails are sometimes confused with solar sails, but a drive sail is an active engine rather than a passive sail reflecting external directed energy.

 Space Drive
The Diametric Drive works with field sources, the Pitch Drive with the field itself, the Bias Drive with the properties of the space that contain the field, and the Disjunction Drive with the properties of matter that create and react to a field.
The diametric drive can also be considered analogous to creating a pressure source and sink in a space medium as suggested previously with the Induction Sail.
In contrast to the diametric drive presented earlier, it is assumed that such a slope can be created without the presence of a pair of point sources.

Because the ion drive's needs much less fuel, the total launched mass is usually lower, which typically results in lower overall cost.
Drives such as VASIMR, and to a lesser extent other Ion thrusters have exhaust velocities that can be enormously higher than this ideal, and thus end up powersource limited and give very low thrust.
It turns out that to a reasonable approximation, for these drives, that fuel use, energetic efficiency and thrust are all inversely proportional to exhaust velocity.

Diametric Drive   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Standard drives use a modular design that allows the amount of negative matter to be tailored to the amount of positive mass aboard the ship.
When the drive is engaged electromagnetic forces are used to pull the mass of negative matter toward the rear of the vessel.
The Class Three Diametric Drive uses ultra dense positive and negative masses to permit a vessel to achieve high acceleration while still protecting its passengers and cargo from acceleration forces.

In the case of the Alcubierre warp drive, this moving section of spacetime is created by expanding spacetime behind the ship (analogous to where the sidewalk emerges from underneath the floor), and by contracting spacetime in front of the ship (analogous to where the sidewalk goes back into the floor).
A "space drive" can be defined as an idealized form of propulsion where the fundamental properties of matter and spacetime are used to create propulsive forces anywhere in space without having to carry and expel a reaction mass.
Hypothetical Diametric Drive: This concept considers the possibility of creating a local gradient in a background scalar property of space (such as gravitational potential) by the juxtaposition of diametrically opposed field sources across the vehicle.

Double-helix zero insertion force connector system (US5154626)
The receptacle is configured as a double-helix formed from a single length of wire which may be a stripped length of insulated hookup wire thus providing two integrally connected insulated leads for highly reliable external interconnections, which may include coaxial cables.
The double-helix is formed into a diametric loop at one end of the double-helix, and the other end is constrained against rotation by a pair of leads emerging at diametrically opposite sides captured within conduit slots of a protective insulated casing.
Alternatively part of all of the total contact pressure may be provided from an external torque source via the drive head and the loop, preferably including resilient linkage such as spring lever arms to maintain constant torque, and particularly in the case of multiple contact connector assemblies, to evenly distribute torque to multiple double-helix receptacles.

Each of the diametrics is reemphasized during the subsequent juvenile and adolescent periods.
the first diametric tends to dominate the motivational side of Kohut's bipolar self, while the second diametric tends to dominate the morality side of Kohut's bipolar self, creating the impression that each diametric is the sum total of its given side of the structure.

 diametric drive
One of the seven types of hypothetical space drives suggested by Marc Millis of the Breakthrough Propulsion Physics Program at NASA's Glenn Research Center (see Millis drives).
A generic version of a 1957 negative mass propulsion concept, the diametric drive would somehow create an asymmetric field around itself.
The interactions of the positive and negative field would then, it is conjecture, propel the spacecraft.

Hypothetical Induction Sail: Analogous to creating a pressure gradient in a fluid, the energy density of the impinging space radiation is raised behind the sail and lowered in front to create a net difference in radiation pressure across the sail.
I also like the Diametric drive, which could produce thrust if only negative inertia were available (which in theory it might be, if negative energy is available in useful amounts).
And the field densities would have to be enormous...however...even the case of permanent magnetic fields illustrates that it's possible to generate a spacetime distortion, vis-a-vis- the Diametric Drive...albeit a vanishingly small one.

Electrical impedance tomography method and apparatus - Patent 5919142
EIT involves the application of spaced electrodes to the skin surface of a body under investigation, usually in the form of a belt around the body such that the electrodes lie in the plane of the body to be investigated.
In a typical biomedical EIT system, low voltage alternating electrical current is applied between two neighboring electrodes (known as a drive pair) and the resulting potentials measured between pairs (known as driven pairs) of all the remaining electrodes.
It is to be noted that neither the drive pair nor the receive pair need to comprise two adjacent electrodes, and in some cases a diametric drive pair and/or receive pair may offer certain advantages for clinical measurements.

Freeman Dyson's experiments with the Orion Drive 'put-put' pulse drive rockets showed that a pulse drive gives the pusher plate time to cool down between explosions; so perhaps the Daedalus concept could be made to work using an intermittent fusion reaction.
But the key to interstellar missions is not to expect excessive speeds; it may never be possible to reach more than 10% cee, so we should concentrate on strategies for a very-long-term but relatively low mass mission.
If such drive systems were possible, I have no doubt that ships far into the future could exceed 30% C. I’m sure we are all aware that such concepts are being given consideration by NASA (http://www.grc.nasa.gov/WWW/bpp/) even if they’re not being all that serious about it.
