Evaluating a Diamond: Clarity: Article from The Diamond Experts: Dutton's Diamonds
Clarity in diamond is a measure of the surface (blemishes) and internal (inclusions) characteristics of a polished diamond, and has, as does color, a major impact on value.
Clarity characteristics are an inherent part of a diamond's life, and can arise from events which occurred during its formation deep in the earth, the mining procedures used to collect it, the cutting of rough into its final shape and the wearing of the stone.
Clarity grades are largely determined by the collective visual appearance that a stone's inclusions exhibit in relationship to the size and shape of the stone.

Diamond Clarity - The 4 C's of Brilliant Diamonds and Diamond Jewelry by Diamonds.com
Diamonds form naturally deep within the Earth under tremendous pressure and extreme heat, and as a result, most contain internal or external features even in their polished state called clarity characteristics.
A diamond's clarity is effectively determined by viewing the gem using 10 power magnification under controlled lighting.
Generally clarity characteristics cannot be seen to the unaided eye until reaching the lower SI to I grades.

However another diamond that did not contain the diamond crystals might be graded as VVS-2 if the grade is based upon internal graining and the comment "clarity grade based upon internal graining" would appear under the "comments" section of the lab report while nothing is indicated under the "keys to symbols" by the plotting diagram.

 Adiamor - Diamond Color
Diamond color is one of the most important factors to consider, as it is noticeable to the "naked" eye.
A diamond's color is graded by GIA on an alphabetical scale from D-Z, with D being absolutely colorless and Z being light yellow.
Diamonds with a K-Z color grade usually have yellow shading that can be detected by the naked eye, however, a well cut stone with good proportions will still release the brilliance and fire of a lower colored diamond, dispersing light in such a way so as to create a beautiful stone.

Clarity characteristics are an inherent part of a diamond's life, and can arise from events which occurred during its formation deep in the earth, the mining procedures used to collect it, the cutting into its final shape and the wearing of the stone.
Clarity in diamond is a measure of the surface (blemishes) and internal (inclusions) characteristics of a polished diamond, and has a major impact on value.
The fewer clarity characteristics a stone has, the more rare, and therefore valuable, it is. A diamond with the highest clarity grade is flawless (Fl), which means it has no discernable (at 10x) blemishes or inclusions.

Clarity is the degree to which a stone is free from external marks called blemishes and internal features called inclusions.
There are some SI clarity diamonds that have inclusions easily visible to the unaided eye and should only be used for earrings or pendants, not for engagement rings.
Once a diamond is clean to the eye, it is the cut of the diamond that produces the brilliance and sparkle, not higher clarity grades.

 DiamondsForAuction.com: Diamond Tutorial
While most of these clarity characteristics are inherent qualities of the rough diamond and have been present since the earliest stages of the diamond crystal's growth below ground, a few clarity flaws are actually a result of the harsh stress that a diamond undergoes during the cutting process itself.
Diamonds with no or few inclusions and blemishes are more highly valued than those with less clarity, not just because they are more pleasing to the eye, but also because they are very rare.
Clarity grades range from Internally Flawless, diamonds which are completely free of blemishes and inclusions even under 10x magnification, to Imperfect 3, diamonds which possess large, heavy blemishes and inclusions that are visible to the naked eye.

Diamond clarity is a term used to describe the absence or presence of flaws inside or on the surface of a stone.
Inclusions are natural identifying characteristics such as minerals or fractures, appearing while diamonds are formed in the earth and thus sometimes referred to as "nature's fingerprints." They may look like crystals, clouds or feathers, and are usually not visible to the naked eye unless magnified.
The diamond clarity scale ranges from FL (Flawless) to I (Included), based on the visibility of inclusions at a magnification of 10x.

A diamond's clarity ranking is determined by the number, size, type and placement of the inclusions.
A stone with only a few hard-to-see pinpricks located near the edge, where they can be covered by the mounting, has better clarity than a stone with a crack located right under the table (the large top facet of the stone).
In a certified diamond, the cracks are charted on the certificate and act as a fingerprint for identifying a particular stone.

Diamond - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Diamond is the hardest natural material known, scoring 10 on the relative Mohs scale of mineral hardness and having an absolute hardness value of between 90, 167, and 231 gigapascals in various tests.
Diamonds have also rarely been found in deposits left behind by glaciers (notably in Wisconsin and Indiana); however, in contrast to alluvial deposits, glacial deposits are not known to be of significant concentration and are therefore not viable commercial sources of diamond.
Diamonds which are not cut to the specifications of Tolkowsky's round brilliant shape (or subsequent variations) are known as "fancy cuts." Popular fancy cuts include the baguette (from the French, meaning rod or loaf of bread), marquise, princess (square outline), heart, briolette (a form of the rose cut), and pear cuts.
