Diana, Princess of Wales (Diana Frances Mountbatten-Windsor; née Lady Diana Spencer; 1 July 1961 – 31 August 1997) was the first wife of The Prince of Wales, eldest son and heir-apparent of Elizabeth II.
This stemmed naturally from her role as Princess of Wales -- she was expected to engage in hospital visiting and to assume the patronage of a variety of charitable organizations -- and from a personal interest in certain illnesses and areas.
