: Natalie Cole - Ask a Woman Who Knows
The 2002 show (originally aired on PBS) celebrates the release of Cole's Tommy LiPuma-produced CD of the same name, and the majority of the songs from that album are heard here, along with "This Will Be," her first solo hit, and others.
Cole is also joined by Diana Krall for two numbers, including a swinging "Route 66" (popularized by Cole's dad half a century ago), while Krall performs the Gershwin standard "'S Wonderful" solo, adding a sultry, understated vibe to the proceedings.
Cole effortlessly adds glamour to live jazz with her great swinging vocal and natural womanly sophistication.

The forgotten Nat Cole was one of the three or four best pianists in the history of jazz, a deceptively easygoing virtuoso whose crystalline solos and dead-center swing left their mark on a hundred distinguished admirers, including Oscar Peterson and Bill Evans.
Diana Krall, who listened eagerly to Cole's records as a child, grew up to be that rarest of birds: a singer-pianist as comfortable and distinctive in one role as the other.
If Nat Cole could have heard Diana Krall do his songs, he would have smiled that wonderful smile of his; he would have known how good she is, even if she doesn't.

And while Cole himself would undoubtedly be furious with Victoria once he realized that Diana saw her, the prospect didn't frighten Victoria.
One moment she was being sucked in by Cole's gentle touch, the next she was staring into a pair of all too familiar blue eyes, her own gaze growing shuttered and cool as she took a step back from Cole.

Personnel: Natalie Cole, Diana Krall (vocals); Roy Hargrove (flugelhorn); Joe Sample (piano); Rob Mounsey (keyboards); Russell Malone (guitar); Christian McBride (bass); Lewis Nash (drums); The Clayton-Hamilton Orchestra.
To be honest, there are some stern folk for whom Natalie Cole will never be forgiven for the overdubbed mega-hit duets she recorded with her late father.
That would be a shame for them, because they'd miss out on the fact that Cole, as she's spent the years since the aforementioned hits proving, is one damn fine standards singer.

Krall's voice is a full, sometimes husky, alto with very little vibrato, and though she can sing scat, and does on "Frim Fram Sauce," she is at her best singing slow songs of aching loss, where, occasionally, her phrasing reminds me of Sarah Vaughan.
There are no drums here (except on "Boulevard of Broken Dreams"), but that is not a limitation, and, in fact, may be an advantage, since the listener's attention remains focused on the tunefulness of the songs and their jazz variations.
This is a fine homage to the Nat Cole Trio, which would have been justly proud of Krall's recording.
