Dianne Reeves: Christmas Time Is Here
Reeves and pianist/arranger Peter Martin offer eleven Christmas songs that range from the tried and true (“Little Drummer Boy,” “I’ll Be Home For Christmas,” “The Christmas Song,” “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”) to the contemporary classic (“Christmas Time Is Here”), to the unusual (Thad Jones’ gorgeous tone poem “A Child Is Born”).
Needless to say, Reeves does extremely well with the ballads, offering a warm, romantic glow to many of these songs that reminds one of the warmth of hot chocolate and sitting inside watching snow fall silently.
Reeves’ CD is perfect for those who want playful, sophisticated jazz versions of beloved Christmas music, but don’t want to hear the same old arrangements.
