respiratory system and the mechanics of breathing
Air is drawn into the body as a result of the contraction of the diaphragm and external intercostal muscles (and consequent fall in air pressure in the lungs) This results in the ribs moving upwards and outwards, with the sternum moving upwards and forwards.
As the air passes through the nasal cavity it is warmed, moistened and cleaned by the various paranasal sinuses, it then passes through the pharynx (throat) on its way to the respiratory passageways.
A pregnant woman may experience breathlessness due to her baby pressing on her diaphragm and ribcage.

Quantum mechanics is a more fundamental theory than Newtonian mechanics and classical electromagnetism, in the sense that it provides accurate and precise descriptions for many phenomena that these "classical" theories simply cannot explain on the atomic and subatomic level.
In the formalism of quantum mechanics, the state of a system at a given time is described by a complex wave function (sometimes referred to as orbitals in the case of atomic electrons), and more generally, elements of a complex vector space.
An alternative formulation of quantum mechanics is Feynman's path integral formulation, in which a quantum-mechanical amplitude is considered as a sum over histories between initial and final states; this is the quantum-mechanical counterpart of action principles in classical mechanics.
