Diaphragm pump - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A diaphragm pump is a positive displacement pump that uses a combination of the reciprocating action of a rubber or teflon diaphragm and suitable non-return check valves to pump a fluid.
In the first type, the diaphragm is sealed with one side in the fluid to be pumped, and the other in air or hydraulic fluid.
The diaphragm is flexed, causing the volume of the pump chamber to increase and decrease.

Pump - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The earliest pump was described by Archimedes around 300 BC and is known as the Archimedes screw pump.
Pumps fall into two categories: positive displacement pumps, which force fluid from one sealed chamber to another with little leakage, and dynamic pumps, which use the momentum of the fluid to move it across an unsealed chamber.
submersible pump : the fluid is moved by a pump joined to a sealed motor and submerged in the fluid to be pumped.

Pump 20 has a drive shaft 22 rigidly held in the pump housing 24 by a large tapered roller bearing 26 at the rear of the shaft and a small bearing (not shown) at the front of the shaft.
The diaphragm is supported by the casing and is disposed between the pumping chamber and the transfer chamber and is adapted for reciprocation toward and away from the pumping chamber.

 PumpBiz : GENERAL PUMP QUESTIONS
Self-priming pump is one that develops a vacuum sufficiently enough for atmospheric pressure (14.7 psi at sea level) to force the liquid to flow through the suction pipe into the pump casing without priming the pump.
A self-priming centrifugal pump is especially designed with a large chamber at its discharge side that acts both as an air separator that separates the air from the liquid, and a reservoir that holds residual liquid used for priming or re-priming the pump.
Pumps of the same NS but of different size are considered to be geometrically similar, one pump being a size-factor of the other.

Air bedding system with diaphragm pump - Patent 5606756
Whereas air flow from the prior art impeller pumps automatically decreases as pressure within the air mattress is increased, such is not the case with the Walker diaphragm pumps; and, absent some sort of safety release valve, there was a danger of overinflation and destruction of the air mattress.
Thus, the diaphragm pump of this invention is said to be comprised of means for rotating its shaft at a speed of less than 3,300 revolutions per minute.
In the embodiment illustrated, the diaphragm pump 26 is connected by an external hose 322 to air wedge 318.

Diaphragm Pump Troubleshooting: Cavitation & Reduced Performance
It is primarily a situation in which the pump is discharging less liquid than its rated capacity due to a reduction or lack of liquid supply to the pump intake.
Cavitation is harmful to diaphragm life because on the suction stroke the diaphragm is being pulled mechanically by the shaft connected to the pressurized diaphragm.
The lower the suction lift condition imposed on the diaphragm, the less the unbalanced mechanical load, and the longer the diaphragm life.

The most common pumps on recreational boats are the diaphragm pumps used for pressurizing freshwater and deck washdown systems.
The only maintenance that diaphragm pumps normally require is regular cleaning of the strainer between the pump and the water supply.
Single-chamber diaphragm pumps tend to have high capacities and are often found on larger boats, but their inlets must still be effectively filtered.

Diaphragm pump design - step 4 for beginners
Diaphragm pumps use a positive displacement design rather than centrifugal force to move water through the casing.
When the diaphragm is lowered the resulting pressure seals the inlet and opens the outlet valve purging the pump housing of water and air.
In these environments centrifugal pumps are unable to perform effectively because their high discharge volumes combined with low water levels would cause the pumps to quickly lose their prime.

Each time the pump failed, it was necessary to completely disassemble, clean and replace the seven o-rings in the center section, and replace the diaphragms.
This allows the compressed air in the pump to expand gradually, thereby reducing the pressure differential to the point where freezing is not a concern.
Not only did the pump pass the two-week purchase trial, it ran without a single problem for a year and a half Comerford says he finally had to replace a diaphragm in June of 1995.

Centrifugal pumps, which are an essential asset in low water pressure areas, are used for pumping large amounts of water.
Remember, both reciprocating diaphragm and rotary peristaltic are often referred to, in the industry, as chemical dispensers, injectors, metering pumps, diaphragm pumps or chem-feeds.
It's far easier to replace a diaphragm and pump head complete with valves (usually just four screws) than it is to detail every o-ring and ball seat.

ProBrewer Interactive - Centrifugal vs diaphragm pump
Air diaphragm pumps can be useful in moving beer, but not in moving hot wort or cleaning solutions.
As it is not possible to get a pump with exactly these characteristics, you need to achieve a slightly higher than required pressure at a constant maximum flow rate, and then throttle the flow back when the filler does not require so much flow.
Running the pump against a dead end is less of a problem for a centrifugal pump than a positive displacement pump such as a diaphragm pump, and providing the beer is cold enough, a few minutes running against a dead end should not cause any harm.

Dry Diaphragm Mechanical Pump Notes   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
When used as vacuum pumps, diaphragm pumps often have two stages in series to produce a lower ultimate vacuum, or else in parallel to produce a higher pumping speed.
Diaphragm pumps are often used to replace water jet pumps in the typical "chemical laboratory" applications of vacuum filtering, thin film evaporation, distillation, and gel drying, particularly in circumstances where water vapor may interfere with the product.
Pumps using the drag mechanism exhaust into a much higher pressure than other types of high vacuum pump, such as turbomolecular or diffusion).
