 [No title]
In the 19th century Diarbekr was one of the largest and most flourishing cities of Asia, and as a commercial centre it now stands at the meeting-point of several important routes.
Diarbekr became a Roman colony in A.D. 230 under the name of Amida, and received a Christian bishop in A.D. It was enlarged and strengthened by Constantius II., in whose reign it was taken of ter a long siege by Shapur (Sapor) II., king of Persia.
The vilayet of Diarbekr extends south from Palu on the Euphrates to Mardin and Nisibin on the edge of the Mesopotamian plain, and is divided into three sanjaks—Arghana, Diarbekr and Mardin.

He assumed the imperial title of "King Naram-Sin, of the four quarters", and, like his grandfather, was addressed as "the god of Agade" (Akkad), reminiscent of the divine honours claimed by the Pharaohs of Egypt.
A finely executed bas relief representing Naram-Sin, and bearing a striking resemblance to early Egyptian art in many of its features, has been found at Diarbekr, in modern Turkey.
Babylonian art, however, had already attained a high degree of excellence; two cylinder seals of the time of Sargon are among the most beautiful specimens of the gem-cutter's art ever discovered.

I spent 3 days in Diarbekr [Diyarbakir (Amida)]; it is one of the most interesting of Turkish cities.
This was on April 19; it was, as I believe, Abdul Hamid's last expedient and I believe too that similar orders were received in all parts of the empire and that the catastrophe was ony averted by a series of fortunate accidents, backed by the influence of the committees.
The Moslem population has been roused by Abdul Hamed's messages and by the rapid organization of the Muhammidieh committees and it hears with sullen anger of the determination of the new government to protect and avenge the Christians.

The Cradle of Mankind: Life in Eastern Kurdistan
Diarbekr in 1895 was one of the centres of the Armenian massacres, and as many as 2500 perished in this place alone.
The massacre was undoubtedly prompted by the Government of Constantinople; but their agents were the fanatical Kurds who swarm in the slums of Diarbekr, and who flocked in eagerly from the surrounding villages to take a hand in the work of slaughter and to share in the plunder which followed.
There was plenty of “talk” at Diarbekr; and we frequently heard the children (no doubt in imitation of their elders) invoking curses on us as we passed along the streets.

Northwards,we may either view Mount Masius as the natural boundary, or the course of the Tigris from Diarbekr to Til, or even perhaps the Armenian mountain-chain north of this portion of the Tigris, from whence that river receives its early tributaries.
Westward, we might confine Assyria to the country watered by the affluents of the Tigris, or extend it so as to in elude the Khabour and its tributaries, or finally venture to carry it across the whole of Mesopotamia, and make it be bounded by the Euphrates.
