Diaspore is a mineral similar to boehite, but harder and heavier, and more suitable for use as a gemstone.
Diaspore is typically colourless, but occurs in brown, green, grey, pink, light red, dark red, purple, white and yellow colours depending upon the impurities in the sample.
Diaspore was confirmed as a distinct mineral in 1801.

It may be readily distinguished from other colorless transparent minerals, with a perfect cleavage and pearly lustremica, talc, brucite, gypsumby its greater hardness of 63/47.
When heated before the blowpipe it decrepitates violently, breaking up into white pearly scales; it was because of this property that the mineral was named diaspore by R. Hauy in 1801, from andao~rei pew, to scatter.
If obtainable in large quantity it would be of economic importance as a source of alumina.

Mostly considered a one locality mineral, for although there are a few other minor localities, it was only found in large quantities on the west coast of Greenland.
It was used as a solvent of the aluminium rich ore, bauxite, which is a combination of aluminium oxides such as gibbsite, boehmite and diaspore.
It is very difficult to remove atoms of aluminium from atoms of oxygen which is necessary in order to produce aluminium metal.

Diaspore size (l x w x t): The size of the diaspore is measured in length (l) x width (w) x thickness (t).
Length refers to the dimension from the point of attachment to the plant to the tip of the diaspore (or the opposite end), width and thickness are two lateral dimensions which may or may not be identical, e.g.
in a compressed diaspore the larger lateral diameter is referred to as width and the smaller one as thickness.

Maples have seeds (diaspores actually, if you want to use the correct term) that are samaras, which "helicopter down" as they fall from the seed parent tree.
But no matter which approach you use and regardless of your design's success (your brilliantly designed diaspore may in fact drop like a stone), the way in which your diaspore morphology came to be is different from the way real diaspore evolution takes place, and this difference can be summed up in one word: teleology.
The differences among "this generation's diaspore morphology" are filtered, presumably with trees that have poorly dispersing diaspores (higher terminal velocity) having lower reproductive success relative to trees that disperse seeds more distantly (lower terminal velocity), and if this trait is inherited, the next generation's diaspores will have on average a lower terminal velocity.

Correlates of diaspore size were investigated by using phylogenetically independent contrasts to assess which ecological factors may have influenced the evolution of different dispersal mechanisms.
Results indicate that diaspore size strongly influences the size to which a seedling can grow in its first few months, which in turn influences the plant's ability to survive summer drought.
Larger seedlings, produced by larger diaspores, are less likely to succumb to drought-induced mortality than the smaller seedlings produced by smaller diaspores.

Diaspore ecology of Mertensia maritima: effects of physical treatments and their relative timing on dispersal and germination
This paper reports an experimental study of water dispersal potential and germination of the shingle beach plant Mertensia maritima in which we consider the effects of physical factors (cold treatment, mechanical wear of the pericarp and salt-water exposure) on the diaspores.
Future studies in diaspore ecology should consider such timing effects as they may be important determinants of the distribution and abundance of plants.

Using the mineral diaspore, we evaluated the ability of local-density (LDA) and generalized gradient (GGA) DFT methods to mimic the compressibility of an anisotropic structure as a function of pressure up to 25 GPa (Figure 2.7).
Calculated structures, bulk moduli, and anisotropic compressibilities for diaspore using the GGA DFT method demonstrated better agreement with experiment.
The test implies that GGA DFT is sufficiently accurate to describe changes in the total energy of a mineral phase as a function of subtle structural changes.
