Topic: Diatessaron (harmony)

Diatessaron is the earliest and most influential of gospel harmonies (the standard tool for gospel studies throughout the patristic and reformation periods).
Diatessaron was the omission of the genealogies of Jesus (Matt 1:1-17; Luke 3:23-38).
Harmony of Ammonius (referred to by Eusebius in his letter to Carpianus) is nowhere extant; according to Eusebius’ description it would be more like a synopsis based around the text of Matthew than a harmony; see H.H. Oliver, ‘The Epistle of Eusebius to Carpianus.

The Diatessaron was used as the standard Gospel text in the liturgy of the Syrian Church for two centuries and was quoted or alluded to by Syrian writers.
Hence from the Syriac Diatessaron text was derived an 11th Century Arabic harmony (the source for the published versions of the Diatessaron in English); and a 13th Century Persian harmony.
The Arabic harmony preserves Tatian's sequence exactly, but with a text corrected to that of the standard Syriac Peshitta Gospels; the Persian harmony differs greatly in sequence, but translates a Syriac text that is rather closer to that in Ephrem's commentary.

Thus earth and water bear to each other the ratio of 4 to 3, or the diatessaron harmony, and water and the sphere of equality the ratio of 3 to 2, or the diapente harmony.
As the sum of a diatessaron and a diapente equals a diapason, or octave, it is evident that both the sphere of fire and the sphere of earth are in diapason harmony with the sphere of equality, and also that fire and earth are in disdiapason harmony with each other.
Fludd emphasizes the fact that as the elements ascend in series of two and a half tones, the diatessaron is the dominating harmonic interval of the elements.

The Pythanorean Theory of Music and Color - The Secret Teachings of All Ages
Continuing his investigation, Pythagoras discovered that the first and second strings produced the harmony of the diatessaron, or the interval of the third; and the tension of the first string being a third greater than that of the second string, their ratio was said to be 4:3, or sesquitercian.
Since they held that harmony must be determined not by the sense perceptions but by reason and mathematics, the Pythagoreans called themselves Canonics, as distinguished from musicians of the Harmonic School, who asserted taste and instinct to be the true normative principles of harmony.
Harmony recognizes harmony, and when the human soul regains its true estate it will not only hear the celestial choir but also join with it in an everlasting anthem of praise to that Eternal Good controlling the infinite number of parts and conditions of Being.

The first time, then, that we hear anything of a Harmony of Gospels ascribed to Tatian, or meet with any trace of such a work, is in the mention of it by Eusebius, writing some century and a half after the Harmony is supposed to have been composed.
Victor met with a harmony entitled Diatessaron, which, as we have already shown to be naturally the case with all such compilations, was anonymous, and he consequently endeavoured to discover a probable author for it.
It must be apparent that the theory that the original of this Harmony, which was done into Latin, was that of Tatian, and not the Diatessaron of Ammonius or someone else who may have compiled a Diatessaron in the course of the four centuries between Tatian and Victor, rests upon a most unsubstantial basis.

This is a harmony of the four Gospels; that is, it is a mixture of the four Gospels in one.
To help resolve this, one of course must consider translations of the Diatessaron, but then one is faced with manuscripts from the sixth to fifteenth century which originate from as far east as Turfan, in China, and as far west as England.

Baarda supplements the meager evidence of Zahn (who should not be criticized: most of the Diatessaronic witnesses were unknown a century ago) and uses the example to explore Tatian's sophisticated techniques of harmonization.

Part of the reason for the difficulty of diatessaronic studies is due to the fact that so many languages are involved.
The scope of this harmony is difficult to determine, but Epiphanius speaks of it as a 'falsified and distorted' version of Matthew, which suggests a document of more-or-less standard gospel length.

The Diatessaron is the title given to the earliest extant harmony of the gospels.
While the original Diatessaron seems to have had a limited circulation, it was improved and translated into a number of languages by the end of the fourth century.
Since the Diatessaron has not survived in its original form, except for a single fragment, it needed to be reconstructed.

Furthermore, since a strong case can be made that the Diatessaron was the first gospel text in Syriac, the form of the OT citations in the Diatessaron—if they could be reconstructed with any degree of reliability—may be of value for investigating the history of the OT in Syriac.
For if the non-Diatessaronic witnesses are not related to the Diatessaron, then, indeed, they are independent witnesses to the variant in the early church—but in that case, the variant cannot be claimed as "Diatessaronic," for all of the witnesses with the reading may have obtained it from (to pick one name from thin air) Augustine.
For example, in reading 13 (Matt 27:9-10) one Diatessaronic witness reads "I was valued," and two (related) witnesses read "I was bought"; despite their differences ("bought" is not "valued"; one can "value" something without "buying" it), Shedinger pronounces a conjunction of witnesses here, and, of course, a "Diatessaronic" reading is the result.

Perrin's second point, that Thomas is dependent on Tatian's Diatessaron, is less thoroughly established.
Rather, Perrin argued that Thomas must have had written sources and the Diatessaron, as the first known source of Gospel tradition in Syriac, is the best candidate to be one of those sources.
Although this argument is very suggestive and Perrin did point out a few contacts in Thomas with the Diatessaron in his initial survey, a full judgment on this issue must be withheld until the detailed comparison is made.

It is a general view that Justin Martyr used a harmony of 3 Synoptic gospels as his main gospel text.
There are about twenty languages in all in which the Diatessaron is now believed to be attested -- languages that were spoken in all sorts of places all over the world.
Indeed, the reason why, in later times, the Diatessaron was widely attributed to Tatian seems clear enough -- this was an effective way to discredit this ancient gospel, and to deny it any validity.
