The earliest New Testament of the Syriac speaking Church consisted of the Diatesseron, the Epistles of Paul, and Acts.
The Diatesseron was written by Tatian by weaving the 4 canonical Gospels together into a coherent and continuous account.
Theodoret, who became bishop of Cyrrhus on the Euphrates in upper Syria in 423, sought out and found more than 200 copies of the Diatesseron, which he 'collected and put away, and introduced instead of them the Gospels of the four evangelists.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Tatian
The other extant work is the "Diatesseron", a harmony of the four Gospels containing in continuous narrative the principle events in the life of Our Lord.
Two revisions of the "Diatesseron" are available: one in Latin preserved in the "Codex Fuldensis" of the Gospels datin from about A.D. 545, the other in an Arabic version found in two manuscripts of a later date.
The "Diatesseron" or "Evangelion da Mehallete" (the Gospel of the mixed) was practically the on ly gospel text used in Syria during the third and fourth centuries.

Ephraim the Syrian referred to it as the Evangelion da Mehallete ("The Gospel of the Mixed"), and it was practically the only gospel text used in Syria during the third and fourth centuries.
In the fifth century the Diatesseron was replaced in the Syrian churches by the four original Gospels.
The earliest member of the Western family of recensions is the latin "Codex Fuldensis", written at the request of bishop Victor of Capua in 545.

 Lectionary
Known in the western world as the Diatesseron, it may have been an attempt to solve the lectionary crisis and put the life of Jesus into one continuous narrative divided into 55 chapters.
Even if we dismiss the evidence of the the early dating of the Diatesseron as evidence of the earliest lectionary system, the year 411 A.D. is without question the date of the a calendar system upon which the lections are ordered (British Museum ms.
The arrangement of the scripture lessons as we know them today with few modifications was arranged by Daniel, a monk of the Monastery of Beth Batin and his disciple Benjamin, Bishop of Edessa.

The truth of the matter is, while it's possible that Rabbula had the power to suppress the Diatesseron in his little corner of the world called Edessa (in Byzantine territory), that hardly gives him the power to extend into Persia and destroy their copies of the Diatesseron.
The subscription to a 600-year later Arabic translation of the Aramaic Diatesseron proves that Rabbula did not suppress the Diatesseron -- at least not in Persia where the Church of the East reigned independent of him and his "maniacal" rantings.
Of the 3 surviving translations of the Aramaic Diatesseron (Latin, Armenian and Arabic) the Arabic is the only one which was made in a sister Semitic tongue.

 Re: Q and Papias
Let me see, Diatesseron by the late second century was exclusivly used in Syria-but I thought that the church was found in such far off places as Britain, and Spain, and India-the Diatesseron threatened to replace the orginals there too?
The evidence seems to me to point to the Diatesseron's use in Syria where it did exclude the 4 as separate units, and if this is correct then a limited phenomenon does not make your case.
Diatesseron was used and survived so long because of its audience and the audience's endorsement.

According to early traditions and legends embodied in the Doctrine of Addai (~400 CE), the earliest New Testament of the Syriac speaking Church consisted of the Diatesseron, the Epistles of Paul, and Acts.
The original language of the Diatesseron (certainly either Old Syriac or Greek) is still a much-debated question.
The term diatesseron borrowed from musical terminology and designated a series of 4 harmonic tones.

The Development of the Canon of the New Testament - Peshitta
(~400 CE), the earliest New Testament of the Syriac speaking Church consisted of the Diatesseron, the Epistles of Paul, and Acts.
Tatian was born of pagan parents in the land of the Assyrians and received an education in Greek culture and its philosophical systems.
It was Tatian's private judgment that the format of a fourfold harmony was the most convenient way in which to present the whole Gospel story at once instead of confusing people by offering them 4 parallel and more or less divergent narratives.

Arcimboldo by darkening that white (of the upper octave) twice as much in proportion to the other (the lower), discovered the same ratio of the diapason going up with eight grades of dark colour to the deepest whiteness; this same whiteness being enumerated and put in the first grade.
Further more, just as the one (Pythagoras) had noticed the sequitertial ratio in the strings and invented the diatesseron, i.e.
the quart, so the other came to the same conclusion, by putting to a white an already shaded white in sequitertial ratio, in which way the diatesseron was produced, for it is the ratio of four to three.

Cum ergo diapente ac diatesseron differentia sit tonus, ipseque quamvis a consonantiis exclusus consonantias tamen iungat; videamus an ipsius quoque proportio Pythagoricis malleis producta in his primis lateat seminibus.
Differt autem, F a B, quia F a se ipsa media et in acutum diapente, et in grave deorsum diatesseron potest mittere; B sola inter omnes voces a se ipsa media nec sursum diapente intendit, nec deorsum diatesseron remittit; unde a quibusdam ignobilis vocatur, unde etiam nec in ordine suo deuteri saeculorum amen recipit.

Feedback: I'm very skeptical about the value of harmonized accounts of the gospels, because I think we have the four accounts for a reason--the distinctiveness of each perspective needs to be taken on its own terms in order for the reader to grasp the intended message.
The Early Church rejected harmonized accounts of the gospels (e.g., the Diatesseron) as canonical and kept the four versions as they are with their rich diversity of views--that is the accepted orthodox Christian viewpoint.
I understand that the reason for the ban was that the Diatesseron was supplanting the canonical gospels, something I doubt anyone will suggest my harmony might do since it keeps the four accounts separated.

I know that the Church did not approve the Diatesseron, an early attempt to harmonize Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.
The Diatesseron interweaves the four Gospels and two non-Gospel sources into a single text.
The Diatesseron is not so much a dangerous document as it is overconfident, tempting readers to believe that Tatian reconstructed events in a you-are-there way.

One of the major reasons they must be first century is their Jewishiness, using desturction of the temple and gentilic nature of Mark as bench marks.
Some examples of these textual criticisms placing Diatesseron material prior to the first-century would be appreciated.
It does so because it means that even though the Diatesseron was written probalby about 172, some of the readings in it were copied form very early versions.

Passages which suggest the Gospel of Matthew might be quoted from heretical writings of the second century and from apocryphal gospels--the Gospel of Peter, the Protoevangelium of James, etc., in which the narratives, to a considerable extent, are derived from the Gospel of Matthew.
Tatian incorporated the Gospel of Matthew in his "Diatesseron"; we shall quote below the testimonies of Papias and St. Irenæus.
For the latter, the Gospel of Matthew, from which he quotes numerous passages, was one of the four that constituted the quadriform Gospel dominated by a single spirit.

The four Gospels [deriving from the Greek text] are freed from the compilation which Tatian produced in the second century [see his Diatesseron], and which obtained great success in oriental countries.
A little later, Thedoret, bishop of Cyrus, [423-457] collected the copies of the Diatesseron in order to introduce in their stead the Gospels of the four Evangelists.
Of these the above-mentioned Rabbula had made an accurate version attempting to bring some sort of order into the diversity of the readings.

Hearing the Gospel lessons Sunday by Sunday, without understanding the special emphases and viewpoints of the Evangelists, makes it possible for us to blend the story into one.
The early church did have a Gospel which blended them into one, called the Diatesseron, but eventually people wanted to retain the four points of view, and the Diatesseron was rejected.
And so we who gather to discuss the Gospels, reproduce in our conversations the decision of the early church, that there is value in hearing different perspectives on Jesus.
