Beneficiation of diatomite earth from Bahia state
Diatomite (diatomaceous earth, kiselguhr) is a sedimentary rock of marine or lacustrine deposition.
Chemically, diatomite is essentially amorphous hydrated or opaline silica with varying amounts of contaminants, such as silica sand, clay minerals, metal salts and organic matter.
Diatomite can be considered as inert due to the chemical composition, which imply that diatomite does not affect taste, smell or colour.

Diatomite is the specific name given to fossil diatom deposits that are large enough and pure enough that they are of potential commercial value (Benton, 1983).
Diatomite was then exposed at the surface by the erosion of overlying sediments (Compton, 1991).
In 1995 eighty-four percent of all diatomite produced in the U.S. was used in three principal areas (table 2); as a filter medium, as a filler, and as an insulator.

 Advanced Minerals - Glossary
Diatomite or diatomaceous earth is a sediment greatly enriched in biogenic silica in the form of siliceous skeleta of diatoms, a diverse array of microscopic, single-cell algae.
In general, the tightest marine diatomite can remove submicron size turbidity, but, as in depth filtration, the objective is to select a filter aid that removes only the size of turbidity necessary to achieve the desired clarity without unnecessarily limiting flow rate.
Diatomite filter aids are available in a wide range of permeability, from about 0.001 to about 15 Darcies.

Diatomite, or Bann clay as it is known locally, is made up of the remains of algae that grew in shallow flooded areas.
The diatomite material is made up of the silica cases of many different species of diatom (green algae) that have decayed leaving only their hard outer cases behind.
The diatomite was laid down between 7,500 and 5,000 years ago in river embayments and shallow lake environments during the time when early people had colonised the area and before peat bogs had begun to form.

The eventual replacement of diatomite filters with membrane types may be speeded by legislation regarding waste disposal, which would make the option of dumping diatomite cake in landfill sites more expensive or even prohibited.
The market for diatomite as a filler in paints, which accounts for 80-100,000tpa worldwide, is declining and consumers are actively seeking alternative materials: this is due partly to mounting concerns regarding crystalline silica, but mainly to the relatively high price of diatomite.
