Diatype - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Diatype is a term first used by the linguist Michael Gregory to describe a type of language variation which is determined by its social purpose.
The distinction between the terms is not always clear; in some cases a language variety may be understood as both a dialect and a diatype.
The term register is often used in place of 'diatype'.

Additional terms such as diatype, genre, text type, style, acrolect, mesolect and basilect (to name a few) may be used to cover the same or similar ground.
Some prefer to restrict the domain of the term 'register' to a specific vocabulary (Wardhaugh, 1986) (which we might commonly call jargon), while others argue against the use of the term altogether.

As a result of this complexity, there is far from consensus about the meanings of terms like "register","field" or "tenor"; different writers' definitions of these terms are often in direct contradiction of each other.
Additional terms such as diatype, genre, text type, style, acrolect, mesolect and basilect among many others may be used to cover the same or similar ground.

By 1918 the foundry had become the largest in the world, with offices in Stuttgart, St. Petersburg, Leipzig, Riga, Budapest and Vienna.
Following World War II, Berthold actively developed proprietary typesetting equipment: in the 1950s, Berthold unveiled its first phototypesetting machine, the Diatype; and in the 1960s, Berthold introduced the Diatronic, its first keyboard-controlled phototypesetter for volume production.
To complement its proprietary typesetting equipment business activities, Berthold developed the Berthold Exklusiv Collection, a collection of typefaces created solely for Berthold by distinguished designers.
