  Lithography
Lithographic plates are sensitive in the UV regime; ~365 nm for photopolymer and ~400 nm for diazo coatings.
When the diazo coating is exposed to light in the 400-410 nm range, the triple bonded nitrogen in the diazo group is split and released as N
The exposed diazo material forms a durable ink-receptive image area which is insoluble in the developer (usually a aqueous mixture of alcohols and surfactants).

H NMR of 1-tosyl-1,2,3-triazole 6i a singlet of methyl group at 2.36 ppm is observed, and for diazo compound 9i - at 2,34 ppm.
In a diazo transfer reaction of asymmetrically substituted malone amides 5b-h, more complex pattern is expected: two direction for the cyclization of diazo function either onto tosylcarbamoyl or to arylcarbamoyl to afford isomeric triazoles 6b-h and 8b-h may be achieved.
It is intersting to note that diazo group transfer reaction onto malonamide 3a with benzyl azide accompanied with the rearrangement of initially formed N-benzyl 1,2,3-triazol5-olate 8h to afford N-sulfonyl 1,2,3-triazol 6h in good yield.

The same oxygen ether is formed by the methylation of the silver salt of the normal diazo hydroxide; this points to the conclusion that the isomeric hydroxides, corresponding with the silver derivatives, have the same structural formulae, namely, R N: N OH.
According to Hantzsch the isomeric diazo hydroxides are structurally identical, and the differences in behaviour are due to stereo-chemica l relations, the isomerism being comparable with that of the oximes.
The constitution of the diazo fatty esters is inferred from the fact that the two nitrogen atoms, when split off, are replaced by two monovalent elements or groups, thus leading to the formula N >CH CO 2 C 2 H 5, for diazoacetic ester.

The resulting aqueous diazo formulation is coated onto a suitable support substrate, such as a standardized polymeric film substrate, with the resulting diazo coating being selectively exposed to ultraviolet radiation so as to decompose the diazonium molecules in an imagewise manner.
Inclusive in the diazo imaging composition is a hydrolyzed resin, such as polyvinyl acetate, which is completely compatible with the stabilizing divalent acids and the diazonium compound present, thus providing an expedient waterborne system for fabricating the light-sensitive member.
The diazo formulation of the present invention is thoroughly blended by conventional techniques and coated on the surface of a substrate to a thickness of from about 15 to 50 microns.

Whiteprint - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The original document was laid on top of the chemically-coated side of a sheet of the diazo paper, which was retrieved from a light-protected flat file, and the two sheets were fed into the diazo-duplicator, being pulled into the machine by rotating rubber friction wheels, rotating at the speed set previously.
Diazo printing was considered to be one of the most economically viable methods of document reproduction of large engineering-type drawings until environmental and health safety concerns of working in close proximity to ammonia over long periods of time forced the migration to xerography during the mid-1980s.
A quirk of diazo blueline prints was that under exposure to ultraviolet light, either from natural sunlight or from typical office fluorescent lighting, a blueline copy would fade over a span of months (in an office environment) or over just days (if outdoors) to total illegibility.

Diazo lithographic printing plate developing process - Patent 4391897
While the unexposed, non-image portions of the diazo in theory remain water soluble, in practice it has been found that the dissolving power of water is insufficient to overcome the ionic bond.
Thus, residual diazo remains in the non-image areas and the art has employed gum arabic to mask the residual diazo, which remains olephilic, to prevent scumming or ink pick-up in the non-image areas (also referred to as the background).
The presence of residual diazo in the background can be demonstrated by exposing a diazo coated silicated aluminum plate thru a negative, developing it with water and then re-exposing the plate thru the same negative turned ninety degrees.

Since most diazo films are sensitive to violet light (410 nm) all duplicators use lamps which radiate in the violet region.
All diazo duplicators require the master and diazo film to be brought together, "emulsion to emulsion," and exposed to the printing lamp.
Since diazo films are positive working media (the image sign of the copy is the same as the original) exposure reduces density.

The Pros & Cons of Subtractive Plates for Web Presses
Additive lithoplates are grained, anodized aluminum with a water soluble diazo coating applied either by the manufacturer (presensitized) or by the pressman (wipe-on).
The diazo, suspended in the photopolymer, is isolated and protected from the atmosphere so it cannot attract moisture nor can it etch the plate.
When a lithoplate is exposed, the portion of the diazo which is struck by the light is chemically altered (polymerized) and fixes the image to the plate.

JCE 1999 (76) 1191 [Sep] Modern Catalytic Methods for Organic Synthesis with Diazo Compounds: From Cyclopropanes to ...
Diazo compounds, ranging from simple diazoalkanes to highly substituted diazocarbonyl compounds, play an important role in modern organic synthesis.
With the development of new catalysts for their decomposition, diazo "reagents", particularly the diazocarbonyl species, can be used in chemoselectively, regioselectively, and stereoselectively controlled ways to generate carbon-carbon and carbon-hetero bonds.
These include acylation of diazoalkanes (e.g., the classical reaction of diazomethane with an acid chloride), diazo transfer processes, and other methods in which a variety of functional groups such as oximes or tosylhydrazones are converted into alpha-diazo carbonyls.

A diazo print is created by superimposing the original transparent drawing on a sheet with a UV light-sensitive diazo coating, similar to the process of making contact prints in standard photography.
The photochemical sensitivity of the diazo compounds generally used in diazo papers is limited to a narrow spectral region, 375–420 μm.
However, the light sensitivity of diazo systems is lower than that of silver photography by a factor of 10 to 100 (Zollinger 1994).

Diazo film is processed using ammonia gas or liquid to produce either a blue or fl image from the original film.
Compared with diazo and vesicular duplicating film, this is a more expensive duplicating process but has exceptional image quality and an archival life of 100 years+ when filmed and stored properly.
One of the most popular formats of diazo and vesicular duplicating film is 105mm rolls or 105mm x 148mm sheets, commonly referred to as microfiche.

Remarkable Wavelength-Dependent Photoreactions of the Bis(diazo) Ketone Having Inequivalent Diazo Groups: Studies in ...
The photoreactions of the bis(diazo) ketone 11, which has two inequivalent diazo groups, have been investigated in solutions at room temperature and in matrixes at 12 K. Irradiation of 11 in benzene containing methanol gave a mixture of the spironorcaradiene 13 and the diazo ketone 17 as primary isolable photoproducts.
The consistent wavelength effects were observed in photoreactions in an Ar matrix at 12 K. The irradiation of 11 matrix-isolated in Ar with light of >350 nm afforded 20 in preference to the isomer 24 as the first-formed intermediates, while 24 was mainly obtained in the long-wavelength irradiation (>420 nm).
The reason for the selective cleavage of the two inequivalent diazo groups of 11 is discussed on the basis of theoretical calculations with the PM3 CI method.
