  Dichlorodifluoromethane
Dichlorodifluoromethane is a colorless gas with a characteristic ether-like odor; it is pressurized and used in liquid form.
Before a worker is placed in a job with a potential for exposure to dichlorodifluoromethane, a licensed health care professional should evaluate and document the worker's baseline health status with thorough medical, environmental, and occupational histories, a physical examination, and physiologic and laboratory tests appropriate for the anticipated occupational risks.
Containers of dichlorodifluoromethane should be protected from physical damage and ignition sources, and should be stored separately from chemically active metals such as sodium, potassium, calcium, powdered aluminum, zinc, and magnesium should be avoided.

The pressure in the pressure vessel at that time was 26 kg./cm..sup.2 G. By opening the valve 5 in the release line 14, the aqueous dispersion was released from the pressure vessel into a low-pressure vessel sealed with water and having a space volume of 32 l through orifices of 3 mm.
Since dichlorodifluoromethane and the like volatalized from the pellets increased the pressure in the low-pressure vessel during pre-expanding, the valve 12 provided in the recovery line 11 was opened to keep the pressure in the low-pressure vessel to around atmospheric pressure (0.97 to 1.05 kg./cm..sup.2 absolute).
Then the dichlorodifluoromethane in the pressure vessel, the low-pressure vessel and the collector was liquefied and recovered.

Special studies on inhalation The Committee was aware of much literature on the inhalation toxicity of dichlorodifluoromethane.
However, these occur at relatively high doses and were not considered relevant to the evaluation of the oral toxicity of dichlorodifluoromethane.
For the purposes of the completeness of this monograph the Committee felt that pertinent references to the inhalation toxicity should be provided (Aviado & Belej, 1974; Aviado & Smith, 1974; Azar et al., 1971; Clayton, 1967; Paulet, 1971; Reinhardt et al., 1971; Taylor et al., 1971; Thompson & Harris, 1974).

Dichlorodifluoromethane (CCl.sub.2 F.sub.2), also known as CFC-12, Refrigerant-12, or simply R-12, is one of the most commonly used CFC refrigerants in automobile air conditioners and elsewhere.
While the invention has been described in the Examples and foregoing description, the same is to be considered as illustrative and not restrictive in character, it being understood that only preferred embodiments have been described and that all changes and modifications that come within the spirit of the invention are desired to be protected.

Uses such as propellants in aerosols which had accounted for about 75% of the release of dichlorodifluoromethane and trichlorofluoromethane, the chemicals of greatest concern (refrigerants and foams accounted for about 14 and 12%, respectively), were banned in the US after Dec 15, 1978(1).
Previously dichlorodifluoromethane was the principal propellant for non-food aerosols(1) and 60% of dichlorodifluoromethane and trichlorofluoromethane production went into aerosols(1).

SUMMARY: The present invention relates to refrigerants generally, and more specifically to a mixture of refrigerants that may be substituted for the environmentally damaging refrigerant dichlorodifluoromethane (R-12).
The Montreal Protocol and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have thus called for a phase out of the use of the CFCs that are known to be contributing to the degradation of the environment, and specifically to ozone layer depletion.
The method of claim 3 wherein said substituting step consists of drop-in substituting a ternary mixture of about 6 to 10 weight percent isobutane, about 34 to 38 weight percent 1-chloro-1,1-difluoroethane, and about 54 to 58 weight percent chlorodifluoromethane, the weight percentages of said components being weight percentages of the overall mixture.

Abstract: Dichlorodifluoromethane is an inert gas that has a long history acting as a refrigerant, allowing us to stay cool in the summer, and as a spray propellant for important consumer substances.
Dichlorodifluoromethane, that we’ve all come to depend on, unfortunately is associated with some gigantic environmental problems.
Dichlorodifluoromethane control began in 1979 with an EPA ban on Freons used for cosmetic propellants [21].

Dichlorodifluoromethane (Freon 12) is a refrigerant banned under the Montreal Protocol as of 2000 because of its ozone-depleting properties.
Potential health impacts associated with Dichlorodifluoromethane include cardiovascular or blood toxicity, gastrointestinal or liver toxicity, neurotoxicity, respiratory toxicity, and skin sensitivity.
For fifty pollutants the legal limit is higher than health-based levels [see more].

Except for decreased weight gain in rats (about 20% in females) receiving 3000 ppm (150 mg/kg/day) dichlorodifluoromethane, no other adverse effects were attributed to this compound in either rats or dogs.
UF -- The NOEL from the 2-year rat study (15 mg/kg/day) and an uncertainty factor of 100 (10 for species extrapolation and 10 for sensitive individuals) were used to derive the RfD of 0.2 mg/kg/day, or 10 mg/day for a 70-kg human being.
No new health effects data were identified that would be directly useful in the revision of the existing RfD for Dichlorodifluoromethane and a change in the RfD is not warranted at this time.

Study objective: To compare the dose response, efficacy, and safety of inhaled triamcinolone acetonide (TAA) with a hydrofluoroalkane (HFA) propellant (75 [micro]g/puff), TAA with a chlorofluorocarbon propellant (dichlorodifluoromethane [P-12]; 75 [micro]g/puff), and placebo in adult patients with persistent asthma.
Conclusion: HFA and P-12 formulations of TAA inhalation aerosol were therapeutically equivalent and showed comparable safety and dose-related efficacy in the treatment of patients with persistent asthma.
Approximately 20% of asthma patients use inhaled corticosteroids, and TAA accounts for a significant proportion of that use.

Isothermal vapor-liquid equilibria for difluoromethane + hydrogen fluoride, dichlorodifluoromethane + hydrogen fluoride, and chlorine + hydrogen fluoride have been measured.
The experimental data for the binary systems are correlated with the NRTL equation with the vapor-phase association model for the mixtures containing hydrogen fluoride, and the relevant parameters are presented.
The binary system difluoromethane + hydrogen fluoride forms a homogeneous liquid phase, and the others form minimum boiling heterogeneous azeotropes at the experimental conditions.

However, there are state groundwater standards for fluorotrichloromethane (Freon 11) at 3,490 parts per billion (ppb) and dichlorodifluoromethane (Freon 12) at 1,000 ppb.
Based on the formula, we recommend levels of freons be no higher than 24 parts per million (ppm) of Chlorodifluoromethane; 0.24 ppm of dichlorofluoromethane; 24 ppm dichlorodifluoromethane; 24 ppm of trichlorofluoromethane and 24 ppm of trichlorotrifluoroethane.
The Federal Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 specifies how much freons can be released into the air.
