Dichroic - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-06)
A dichroic material is one which either causes light to be split up into distinct beams of different wavelengths (colours), or, one in which light rays having different polarizations are absorbed by different amounts.
An example is the dichroic prism, used in some camcorders, which uses several coatings to split light into red, green and blue components for recording on separate CCD arrays.
The second meaning of dichroic refers to a material in which light in different polarisation states travelling through it experience a varying absorption.

Dichroic prism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A dichroic prism is a prism that splits light into two beams of differing wavelength (colour).
They are usually constructed of one or more glass prisms with dichroic optical coatings that selectively reflect or transmit light depending on the light's wavelength.
A trichroic prism assembly is a combination of two dichroic prisms which are used to split an image into red, green and blue components so they can be separately detected on three CCD arrays.

DichroMagic About   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-06)
Dichroic is defined in the dictionary as “The property of a surface of reflecting light of one color and transmitting light of other colors.” Transmitted colors are what you see when you would look through a piece of DichroMagic® glass.
Dichroic coatings are produced by vacuum depositing multiple thin layers of exotic materials onto a glass substrate.
DichroMagic dichroic glass is a state of the art thin film combining the science of vacuum deposition and optical filters with the art of glass.

 NCL Dichroic Art Glass
"Dichroic Glass" is somewhat of a misnomer since the dielectric coating that produces all the interesting colors on a piece of glass is not glass at all but a group of 15 to 45 very thin layers of metal oxides.
The colors available from the typical Dichroic designs are actually a pair of colors from a rainbow, one in transmission and a different one in reflection.
For artists actively using Dichroic Glass, a second possibility to eliminate confusion is to submit samples of the colors that are desired in a given application.

 Arrow Springs Flameworking - Dichroic
Dichroic coated glass is available in a variety of styles: Fused strips and rods for flameworking and cut strips and sheets for stained glass fusing.
Dichroic coated rods are coated on one side, down their length with the crest having the most intense color.
Dichroic coated cut strips, intended for use in stained glass fusing, have the dichroic coating cover the entire width and are not fused.

Applications of dichroic coatings range from use in diagnosing diseases (by tracing fluorescent antibodies), to use in heat-seeking missiles, to being a principle component in energy producing solar cells and serving as a quantitative measuring device in research photography.
The base, or preliminary color of dichroic glass is identified by viewing the glass straight on in transmitted light.
Dichroic glass selectively reflects away certain wave-lengths (colors) of light and allows the remaining wave-lengths to transmit through.

 Dichroic Glass
Dichroic is in the nineties, what silver chloride was for hot glass blowers in the sixties, an easy way to add color and intrigue to the piece of glass.
Dichroic coated glass is produced by a process called "thin film physics" and is generally referred to as a color separator.
When you place the dichro on with the coated side down, the surface remains nice and glassy and there is less of a problem with burn out, since the coating is sealed in.

Due to their nature, the color of the transmitted light is different from the color of the reflected light, which are both different from the color of the dichro when viewed at a 45 degree angle.
Dichroic filters can be obtained that produce near-ultraviolet light, which can be used to produce an interesting night-time effect, similar to that produced by a fl light.
Dichroic filters are expensive, but will not burn up with use, thus making them good investments.

 Dichroic
The spectacularly vibrant colors exhibited by dichroic glass are created by a very sophisticated combination of extremely thin, clear, crystalline layers that interact with each other and produce very specific reflected and transmitted colors.
Dichroic glass is created via the application of many individual thin films on the order of one micron in total thickness.
Dichroic films are applied in a very sophisticated machines called "vacuum vapor deposition systems" costing hundreds of thousands of dollars.

This Dichro is deposited via a special procedure deemed “vacuumed thin film deposition” which is essentially an evaporation process of fine metals floating up in a spinning chamber and evenly attaching themselves to the underside of a glass sheet.
Dichro has one transmitted color and one totally different reflected color, hence the name Dichronic- “di” meaning 2 and “chronic” meaning color.
Dichroic coatings were originally designed for use where there was a need for heat to be transmitted away from a high intensity light source.

The Magic Of Dichroic Glass   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-06)
Dichroic glass is a high-tech spin-off of the space industry.
Thin layers of metallic oxides, such as titanium, silicon, and magnesium are deposited upon the surface of the glass in a high temperature, vacuum furnace.
Dichroic coatings transmit certain wavelengths of light, while reflecting others, thus creating an interference-effect similar to the iridescence observed in Nature's fire opal, dragonfly wings and hummingbird feathers.

What is dichroic glass? - Trezora
Dichroic glass requires complex processing techniques and is created by only a handful of manufacturers who use high-tech equipment like a high temperature vacuum chamber.
In the case of dichroic glass, metallic oxides are heated in a vacuum chamber to very high temperatures, using a high-voltage electron beam, until they are vaporized and deposited onto the surface of the glass.
Most dichroic glass uses both transmission and reflection of light to achieve he desired effect so that as you rotate a piece of dichroic glass, even slightly, youll see a shifting rainbow of colors.

 Dichroic Glass
Dichroic glass is handmade by layering glass and foils on top of each other to give an exciting and vivid effect of color and form.
Typically, a layer of dichroic glass is fused over either fl or clear glass, to create the effect.
Developed by NASA, dichroic glass has microscopic, thin layers of rare oxides vacuum sprayed on the glass, altering the refraction index of the spectrum, causing the light rays to bend in wonderful color play.
