Dichroic Filters - FAQ - About Lighting - Training - Support - High End Systems
Dichroic filters are multi-layer thin-film coatings deposited on a glass substrate using high vacuum deposition techniques.
Dichroic filters are also environmentally durable and their performance will not deteriorate over time.
A notch filter is the opposite of a bandpass filter.

Olympus Microscopy Resource Center: Light and Color - Light Filtration
Dichroic filters are far more accurate and efficient in their ability to block unwanted wavelengths when compared to gel and glass absorption filters.
Dichroic filters are commonly used for a number of applications including specialized filtration for optical microscopy and photography.
The CC filters are available as Wratten filters (sized at 2" x 2" or 3" x 3") in 6 different colors: blue, yellow, green, magenta, cyan and red and in several densities (as illustrated in Tables 1 and 2).

Dichroic coatings   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Dichroic filters are manufactured with the latest in state of the art technology.
Dichroic filters have many features that are not available in most color mediums such as higher transmission in ultra-chromatic colors, higher tolerance to infrared energy, less then 4% absorption and longer life.
A dichroic filter is composed of dielectric materials which are deposited on the surface of a boroscilicate substrate (glass).

 NCL Dichroic Art Glass
"Dichroic Glass" is somewhat of a misnomer since the dielectric coating that produces all the interesting colors on a piece of glass is not glass at all but a group of 15 to 45 very thin layers of metal oxides.
The filter is generally as durable as the substrate it is on.
For artists actively using Dichroic Glass, a second possibility to eliminate confusion is to submit samples of the colors that are desired in a given application.

Dichroic filters are durable glass color filters that transmit only certain wavelengths of light, reflecting the rest of the spectrum, rather than absorbing it.
Dichroic filters are generally created by vaporizing two minerals onto a heated glass surface.
However, the significant difference is that dichroic filters selectively reflect the unwanted portion of the spectrum, passing the desired color.

Prefect's Pages.. Publications .. IQP .. Dichroic Color Filters
While this is an interesting characteristic of the filters that has its own set of applications, the most important thing to remember about dichroic filters is that they will produce a saturated, pure, single wavelength of light when used on an instrument.
Dichroic filters can be obtained that produce near-ultraviolet light, which can be used to produce an interesting night-time effect, similar to that produced by a fl light.
Dichroic filters are expensive, but will not burn up with use, thus making them good investments.

 Dichroic Glass
Dichroic is in the nineties, what silver chloride was for hot glass blowers in the sixties, an easy way to add color and intrigue to the piece of glass.
If dichroic is used in your work with this in mind, it can be used in many ways to help you express your self by adding a magical element to your work.
Dichroic coated glass is produced by a process called "thin film physics" and is generally referred to as a color separator.

 LRIS-B Overview
Wavelengths shortward of the dichroic cutoff (the dichroics are coded by the wavelength of light that corresponds to the 50% point in transmission/reflectance; e.g., the D500 will pass half of the 500 nm photons into the red camera and reflect the other half into the blue camera) are reflected into the blue spectrograph.
Dichroic beam splitters invariably produce low frequency ``wiggles'' in the efficiency of transmitted and reflected light that can be noticed in high S/N spectral observations; these can be removed through flat fielding.
The dichroics produce no noticeable shift in the focus for the red side of the spectrograph, while there are very small shifts in optimum focus of the blue side spectrograph camera that depend on the chosen dichroic.

Ideally, the wavelength of the dichroic mirror is chosen to be between the wavelengths used for excitation and emission.
These filters are usually a special type of filter referred to as an interference filter, because of the way in which it blocks the out of band transmission.
It is often the case that a specific combination of excitation filter, emission filter and dichroic mirror are needed to visualize and/or quantitate the fluorescence emission from a particular fluorescent species.

 LOT-Oriel - Filter Glass
Filter glass is unique in that it transmits a very broad band of light, and is generally characterized as either longpass or bandpass.
Many of the bandpass filters are used to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio of illumination systems, whereas the longpass filters are used as order/wavelength sorting filters.
Since these filters are highly absorbing, the effects of angle of incidence, and ambient temperature, are different from the all-dielectric type.

Color Coatings by ZCR Coatings for Optics
Unlike plastic color gels which age and breakdown relatively quickly during use, dichroic filters are designed to stand up to the heat and UV energy in high energy light sources.
Dichroic color filters have the advantage of reflecting unwanted light instead of absorbing the energy, which allows dichroic filters to be used with much higher intensity light sources.
Dichroic color filters are used in a variety of applications including architectural, entertainment, science, and engineering.

 gobos and dichroic filters
The dichroic filter is a glass substratum on which an alternate succession of dielectric materials is lain.
The number and the thickness of the layers distinguish the variety of colours of filters, for example a red filter from a yellow one or a blue from a green one.
A filter that allows the transmission of radiations with wave length below 510 [nm] (about 10 nm more than the blue one) determines a transmitted light that will be still blue, but now a clearer blue.

Reynard Corporation - Thin-Film Coatings - Dichroic Filter Coatings
Dichroic filter coatings are sometimes known as color separation filter coatings, because their purpose is to separate incoming visible light into separate colors or into beams of different wavelengths.
Applications of dichroic or color separation filters include color correction and light balancing, and they are found in architectural, studio and theatrical lighting, color TV or camcorder cameras, automated color sorting systems, color enlargers and color projectors.
The application of the thin film dichroic coating in layers of varying number and thickness determine the precise wavelengths that are separated or passed through.

Without filters, the detector would not be able to distinguish the desired fluorescence from scattered excitation light (especially within the emission band) and autofluorescence from the sample, substrate, and other optics in the system.
The dichroic is an edge filter used at an oblique angle of incidence to efficiently reflect light in the excitation band and to transmit light in the emission band.
Poor image registration, or "pixel shift," results when a filter in an imaging path (for example, the emitter or dichroic beamsplitter in a fluorescence microscope) with a non-zero wedge angle deviates the light rays so as to cause a shift of the image detected on a high resolution CCD camera.

Bead Realm   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
The term “Dichroic Glass” is a bit of a misnomer, as the glass itself does not produce the colors, rather it is the dielectric coating of micro-thin layers of metal oxides and quartz applied to the surface of the glass which produces a “interference filter” that creates the varied colors we see.
What makes the dichroic filter unique is that the material absorbs no light, each wavelength striking the surface of the “interference filter” which acts as a selective color mirror is accounted for either in reflected light or transmitted light, there is no loss of light energy due to absorption.
Dichroic glass is created by a highly technical vacuum deposition process whereby multiple micro-thin layers of metal oxides, quartz crystals and others are vaporized with an electron beam gun mounted at the bottom of an airless vacuum chamber.
