Dichroic - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
A dichroic material is one which either causes light to be split up into distinct beams of different wavelengths (colours), or, one in which light rays having different polarizations are absorbed by different amounts.
An example is the dichroic prism, used in some camcorders, which uses several coatings to split light into red, green and blue components for recording on separate CCD arrays.
The second meaning of dichroic refers to a material in which light in different polarisation states travelling through it experience a varying absorption.

Prism (optics) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In optics, a prism is a device used to refract light, reflect it or break it up (to disperse it) into its constituent spectral colours (colours of the rainbow).
The traditional geometrical shape is that of a triangular prism, with a triangular base and rectangular sides.
Dispersive prisms are used to break up light into its constituent spectral colours because the refractive index depends on frequency (see dispersion); the white light entering the prism is a mixture of different frequencies, each of which gets bent slightly differently.

Dichroic - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A dichroic material is one which either causes visible light to be split up into distinct beams of different wavelengths (colours), or, one in which light rays having different polarizations are absorbed by different amounts.
In these crystals, the strength of the dichroic effect varies strongly with the wavelength of the light, making them appear to have different colours when viewed with light having differing polarisations.
A mirror, filter, or beam splitter is referred to as dichroic in the colour-separating first sense; a dichroic crystal or material refers to the polarization-absorbing second sense.

Printing apparatus for photosensitive media using dichroic prism in illumination path - US Patent 6624949   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Dichroic prisms provide combinations of dichroic surfaces between prisms, cemented together in arrangements such as in the familiar X-cube or X-prism, Philips prism, and related devices.
Dichroic combiners, typically X-cubes or X-prisms and Philips prisms, have been widely used in digital projectors for combining the optical paths of modulated light, incident from a number of different axes, into a single, common axis for projection.
Output light from dichroic prism 26 goes to a condenser lens 42 and to a field lens 50 which directs the illumination beam to a uniformizer 44, such as an optical tunnel, integrating bar, or lenslet array, that provides a uniform illumination field for incident light beam L.

Cross dichroic prism, method of making the same, and full-color projector using the same - US Patent 6101041   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
It also discloses that, as a result, the optical axis deviation among the individual colors, i.e., image deviation, in a quadrangular dichroic prism whose sides each have a length of 40 mm can be suppressed to 13 µm, which is about 1/3 of the pixel size of normally employed light valves, i.e., 40 µm.
When the individual prisms 11, 12, 21, 22 constituting the prism 1 have refractive indexes different from each other, refraction occurs at the boundaries between the individual prisms, whereby the output light beams would not be in parallel to each other, with their optical axes forming an angle of θ therebetween.
of the cross section of the prism 1 is set to 150 mm under the same refractive index condition, the amount of deviation caused by the refractive index difference is only 4 µm, and thus can be suppressed to a deviation amount sufficiently smaller than the pixel pitch.

Prism (optics)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
In optics, a prism is a device used to reflect light or to break it up (to disperse it) into its constituent spectral colors (colors of the rainbow), traditionally built in the shape ofa right prism with triangular base.
The angle that the beam of light makes with the interface as well as the refractive indices of the two media determine whether it is reflected orrefracted, and by how much (see refraction, total internal reflection).
Dispersive prisms are used to break up light into its constituent spectral colors because the refractive index dependson frequency (see dispersion); the white light entering the prism is a mixture of different frequencies, each of whichgets bent slightly differently.
