Rethinking Schumann : reworkings of the Schumann Vocal cycles by The American Poet Elizabeth Kirchner and the Italian ...
Hearing these works in concerts and recordings as well as performing them may be already be considered to be participating in the artistic vision of Schumann, but some creative artists are interested in taking this process one step further and « rethinking » these works according to their own personal reactions to them.
Dichterliebe in Four Seasons has been performed in Vienna, Austria and in Brookline, MA and Quincy MA USA.
Gian Paolo Chiti’s new versions for Piano solo of Dichterliebe and Frauenliebe und Leben were the result of years of performing these cycles in concert, notably with his wife the Mezzo-Soprano and Musicologist Patricia Adkins Chiti.

Dichterliebe - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Composed in 1840, Dichterliebe is the best-known song cycle of Robert Schumann.
Scholars debate the extent to which Schumann, a romantic himself, understood Heine's irony, and chose to portray it through music.
Though Schumann originally set 20 of Heine's poems, only 16 appear in the first edition of Dichterliebe:

He is a critical favorite now, and this CD is one of his better ones, since the pure lyricism of Schumann's writing in Dichterliebe suits his approach.

His version of Dichterliebe, although also extremely musical and equally moving, lacks of a bit of the detail and subtlety we find in, for example, the Fischer-Dieskau recordings-arguably among the best.
We must consider that Wunderlich, contrary to Fischer Dieskau for instance, sings most of these pieces in its original key, which also makes the experience of listening to this CD one of the best ever.

Schumann's Dichterliebe and Early Romantic Poetics - Cambridge University Press
This book offers a theory of Romantic song by re-evaluating Schumann's Dichterliebe of 1840, one of the most enigmatic works of the repertoire.
The Romantics rejected the ideal of a coherent and organic whole and cherished the suggestive openness of the Romantic fragment, the disconcerting tone of Romantic irony and the endlessness of Romantic reflection - thereby realising an aesthetic of fragmentation.
Close readings of many songs from Dichterliebe show the singer's intense involvement with the piano's voice, suggesting a 'split Self' and the presence of the 'Other'.

Fritz Wunderlich Discography: Schumann - Dichterliebe / Giesen 1965
[Dichterliebe:] "Wunderlich, had he lived, would not doubt have surpassed this early recording of a favourite Schumann song-cycle but, even with an often unimaginative accompanist, his freshness here is most endearing, irresistable with so golden a voice.";
We are left with a beautifully voiced rendering, but one that misses the agony and unbearable nostalgia predicated by Heine and Schumann.
Simon Trezise in Classic CD, May 1997: "Wunderlich was at an unhappy moment in his lieder singing in 1965 when this Dichterliebe was recorded.

CD Baby: MAX VAN EGMOND (BARITONE) & KENNETH SLOWIK (FORTEPIANO): Schubert: Schwanengesang/Schumann: Dichterliebe
Unlike Die schöne Müllerin and Winterreise, Schubert's Schwanengesang is not a song cycle, but a collection of fourteen songs compiled by the publisher, Tobias Haslinger, with the help of the composer's brother, Ferdinand, after the composer's untimely death in 1828.
Schumann's Dichterliebe, composed in 1842, sets sixteen poems from Heinrich Heine's Buch der Lieder (1827).
Max van Egmond's concerts, recordings and master classes all provide eloquent testimony not only to his expertise in all areas of the vocal repertoire, but also to his great kindness and humanity in the service of music.

Schumann: Dichterliebe, Liederkreis / Goerne, Ashkenazy | ArkivMusic
Matthias Goerne and Vladimir Ashkenazy have the perfect feel for the material, and have created a perfectly balanced partnership for its presentation.
Both 'Dichterliebe' and the Heine 'Liederkreis' come from 1840, the year in which Robert Schumann, inspired by Heinrich Heine's 'Buch der Lieder' and his own love for Clara Wieck, turned from piano miniatures to compose 140 songs.
The cycles recorded here are two of Schumann's vocal masterworks: each song is an apt evocation of its text, each cycle intricately bound together.

Record: *Liederabend* to feature Robert Schumann's song cycle *Dichterliebe* Oct. 9 at Steinberg
Literally translated as "evening of song," Liederabend is a German term referring to a recital given by a singer and pianist, particularly of works by 19th-century Austrian or German composers.
The Oct. 9 program will feature Robert Schumann's beloved cycle of 16 songs titled Dichterliebe, based on poems of Heinrich Heine.
Translated as "poet's love," the cycle gained popularity when its first song, "Im Wunderschönen Monat Mai," was used as the musical and thematic "glue" for Jon Maran's frequently performed play Old Wicked Songs, which played off-Broadway in the 1990s and was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 1996.

Bostridge presents a tantalizing program of all Schumann songs - The complete Liederkreis, Op.24; the complete Dichterlieber ("Poet's Love") Op.48 and a selection of seven bits and pieces, all of which are set to poems by Heinrich Heine.
The Lied, a native style of Germany, means simply "song".
