The invention of permanent sound recording was coincident with this group of musicians, and the early histories of both are inextricably intertwined.
The recording mechanism involved the revolution of the cylinder at a fixed speed, while a stylus, attached to a laterally moving arm, transmitted the vibrations through the horn diaphragm and into the groove as it was being cut.
The early fortunes of the recording industry are still greatly under researched, and much of the relevant documentation has failed to survive: through carelessness, lack of interest, or destruction during the two wars.

BW Online | May 19, 2003 | Can Dick Parsons Rescue AOL Time Warner?
The new company's 16-person board was evenly divided between former directors of AOL and of Time Warner, and responsibility for the operating divisions was split between co-Chief Operating Officers -- Parsons and Robert W. Pittman, 47, AOL 's smooth but hard-driving president.
As 2001 wore on, it seemed to Case that Levin was so fixated on meeting the company's ambitious quarterly earnings projections that he had forgotten about the cross-company initiatives that were the reason for merging in the first place.
If Parsons succeeds in getting the company squared away over the next few years, they say, AOL Time Warner might be better off reverting to a visionary type of CEO to spur the growth of what is essentially a portfolio of mature businesses.

 The Chance Label
Chance Records, like Parrot, United, and Aristocrat, was an independent Chicago label that pioneered in recording the new African-American sounds that swept the city after World War II: the electrified Mississippi blues and the doowop harmony groups.
His recording career preceding this January date consisted of an unreleased session with Columbia (1946), two released songs for Chess (October 1950) that he recorded with Muddy Waters' band, and a classic four-song session for JOB in April 1952.
The company kept the sides in the can, but in October 1954 two were put on one of the very last records on Chance's release schedule: "Blues in a Letter," a stone solid blues, and "Jump Children." "Jump Children" is a terrific number, but it didn't excite the public in 1954.
