 Under the Greenwood Tree
Dick’s slumbers, through the three or four hours remaining for rest, were disturbed and slight; an exhaustive variation upon the incidents that had passed that night in connection with the school-window going on in his brain every moment of the time.
Dick knew that Fancy, by the law of good manners, was bound to dance as pleasantly with one partner as with another; yet he could not help suggesting to himself that she need not have put quite so much spirit into her steps, nor smiled quite so frequently whilst in the farmer’s hands.
Dick wondered how it was that when people were married they could be so blind to romance; and was quite certain that if he ever took to wife that dear impossible Fancy, he and she would never be so dreadfully practical and undemonstrative of the Passion as his father and mother were.

In the early days of Greenwood Cemetery, there was no regular sexton, but patrons cared for their own family lots, a good many maintaining fences around them to keep cattle from trampling the graves.
Greenwood Cemetery has one area designated for imbedded stone markers, the Oaklawn Addition, Blocks B and C. Other than those blocks, Greenwood Cemetery allows the family to place any acceptable style of memorial in the other areas.
The first burial in what is now Greenwood Cemetery was a daughter of Dempsey Overman who died in 1849, and was buried in the Overman family cemetery.

 Ragged Dick
Dick might readily have taken advantage of his unsteadiness, and knocked him down; but he was not vindictive, and chose to act on the defensive, except when he could not avoid it.
Dick dressed himself with scrupulous care, giving his shoes a "shine" so brilliant that it did him great credit in a professional point of view, and endeavored to clean his hands thoroughly; but, in spite of all he could do, they were not so white as if his business had been of a different character.
Dick thereupon told all he knew as to the general character and suspicious conduct of Jim Travis, and the cashier agreed with him that he was probably the thief.

WAG: Thomas Hardy's Under the Greenwood Tree
The rest of the novel is primarily occupied with getting one of the choir’s younger members—Dick Dewey—close enough to the village’s new schoolteacher to make her fall in love with him and accept his marriage proposal.
(Dick fell in love with her when she came to the window to thank the carolers on Christmas Eve.) There’s nothing particularly new here, but Hardy nicely captures the pleasures and woes of first love and wooing.
Under the Greenwood Tree is set thirty years before its publication, and for all its comedy, it exudes an elegiac sadness for a rural world which had disappeared by the time Hardy sat down to write its story in an era of trains and rampant urbanization.

The essays reveal the extent to which Philip K. Dick's personal obsessions pre-figured postmodernist concerns with humanity's self-alienation, cultural and personal paranoia, and the politics of simulation, deceit, and self-deception.
The contributors reveal how Dick's ontological concerns, stated in his repeated questioning of "What is real?," are also political concerns.
His cultural critique also receives significant exposition, as the contributors reveal how Dick's fiction enacts the larger cultural struggles of cold war America, with its conflicting private visions and public realities, and its personal and political loyalties.

Masterpiece Theatre | Under the Greenwood Tree
Amongst the surrounding farms and woodlands of the idyllic village of Mellstock, Dorset, a bond grows between local boy Dick Dewy and a new arrival, the beautiful schoolteacher Fancy Day.
Through a maze of intrigue and passion across four seasons, Fancy is torn; she must make a decision of either head or heart.
Hardy treats this subplot as playfully as he does Fancy's romantic quandary, but it also has a poignant edge: The pump organ, or harmonium, was a new invention of the day that symbolized the passing of ancient village customs, as does the arrival of steam power and new farm machinery.
