Toon Zone Forum - Am I the only person who think Dick Lundy stunk?
Lundy was a "softer" director than others at MGM or Warners at the time he was doing the Barney shorts, which no doubt goes back to his Disney roots.
I think that the reason why people see Lundy as a bad director is because they tend to compare him to his fellow MGM directors Bill, Joe and Tex. If you judge his series as a whole (Disney, Lantz and MGM), you'll see what a great director he was.
Lundy was one of Lantz's bets directors, especially with Andy Panda because when he left, Lantz made no more Andy Panda shorts.

His cartoons may not be as voilent as Shamus Culhane's cartoons, but his cartoons had better animation and well-timed gags, plus his cartoons had a little more personality in them.
OK, so he had little personality and an undistinctive voice, but he was a good pantomine character, and he was able to use the character in some dialogue-free cartoons (such as "The Bandmaster" and "Musical Moments From Chopin") and still make him funny.
It's been ages since I last saw one of Lundy's "Barney Bear" cartoons (the BBC stopped showing them several years ago), but I always liked them better than the earlier Rudy Ising cartoons.
