Ironically, the role of Darrin was offered to Dick Sargent before it was given to Dick York but Sargent had a prior commitment, just as Tammy Grimes was similarly unavailable to play Samantha (originally to be called "Cassandra").
York's chemistry with Montgomery really showed and I believe that was one of many important elements in the polularity and believability of the show.
Dick Sargent did a fine job replacing Dick but there was always something "missing" about his performance, that being that he wasn't Dick York of course and his chemistry with Sam never seemed as "real" or "genuine" as Dick York's was with her!
