Zimmer, the former Republican congressman and unsuccessful candidate for U.S. Senate, had decided -- as expected -- to stick to his plan to try to win his House seat back in the 12th District next year, the seat currently occupied by Democrat Rush Holt, who took it away from Republican Michael Pappas.
Zimmer's plans regarding a run for a Senate seat have changed so often that it is hard to keep up.
But in the latest instance, he had been planning to run for the House when Gov. Christie Whitman was the presumed GOP nominee for Sen. Frank Lautenberg's seat, and he's decided to keep running for the House with her out of the race and the GOP Senate nomination up for grabs.

When Zimmer ran for the Senate in 1996, he was subjected to almost identical attacks from his then-rival, U.S. Sen. Bob Torricelli, and it was reported at the time that Zimmer's sisters and his mother had suffered from cancer.
