  The History of New York State, Book X, Chapter I
Broome County was erected from Tioga County March 28, 1806, with the county seat a Binghamton, which had been for years a half shiretown of Tioga.
Chenango, one of the original towns of Broome, established February 16, 1791, is the mother of seven of the towns of the county.
It is in the northwest of the county on the lands of the "Boston Purchase" an was settled in 1791 by men from New England.

 History of Dickinson, New York
Like a number of other townships, Dickinson was carved out of what was originally territory comprised in the township of Chenango, this being the last of the series to be set off from the mother township.
December 12th, 1890, the board of supervisors of Broome county passed a resolution to the effect that a new township should be set off from the township of Chenango, which action was ratified by the State Legislature at its annual session in 1891.
The only village of Dickinson is called Port Dickinson, which came into existence at the time of the opening of the Chenango canal in 1837, when it was a shipping station and trading point for the people living in the vicinity.

Bingham envisioned a new village at the meeting of the two rivers and hired local merchant Joshua Whitney to be his land agent.
Whitney was responsible for the first street plan of the village, worked to entice new settlers to the area, and became the area's first elected representative to Albany.
Despite the economic failure of the canal (it never made a profit), the county benefitted from the arrival of new settlers and merchandise, as well as providing a means of shipping finished goods in and out of the area.

SHARP, CHARLES W., was born in Morrisville, Madison county, August 12, 1842, and is a son of Charles H. Sharp, a mechanic, who came with his family to New York Mills in 1853 and died in Wisconsin in 1886.
Sherrill received his education in New Hartford, and in Utica, and was for several years a salesman in an importer's house at New York; but in 1863 went to the front with the 23d Brooklyn Regiment, and was in service three months, going out as a private soldier, and returning as lieutenant.
SMITH, DEWITT CLINTON, was born in Trenton, Oneida county, January, 22, 1854, son of John H. and Martha (Harbeck) Smith, natives of New York and Connecticut respectively.
