She served temporarily as a school ship for student officers and as escort to coastwise merchant traffic before beginning duty with transatlantic convoys.
In early 1945, orders came for the U.S.S. Spangenberg DE 223 and other ships of Task Force 66 to report for duty under the British Admiralty for anti-submarine patrol and convoy escort support group work in and south of the Irish Sea, where sinkings by German submarines were numerous.

 History of the USS Benham
Untill 2 July the ship operated with the CVE group and recovered valuable intelligence data on 27 June from the bodies of four Jap airmen floating near the wreckage of their plane.
As screening vessel for Task Group 38.2 the ship participated in the Palau strikes of 6 and 7 September and the initial strikes on Mindanao and the Central Philippines commencing on the 9th and continuing through the 15th.
The ship participated in the strikes on Camrahn Bay, Saigon, Hong Kong, Canton and Hainan during the middle of January, and when the group left the South China Sea, the Benham was the last ship to leave, being on picket station astern.

Nashawena is the ship with most in common with Albert J. Myer and William H. Bullard origins -- she was built as the Army Signal Corps cable layer William A. Glassford.
Cable ships are typically deep draft and the connection between the deep ocean cable and shore has to be accomplished by various inventive means, very often using barges of some type.

VOLADOR conducted a shipping reconnaissance patrol until the night of 27 September 1953 when she made rendezvous with and was relieved by submarine CAIMAN (SS-323).
The submarine was saved from possible total destruction due to a spectacular pier fire at the shipyard on 9 and 10 November 1962 by the duty section led by the duty officer and the executive officer.
