The original plan was for a dictionary of some 15 or 20 volumes that would provide critical biographies of the important figures in Canada's history from the 16th century to the middle of the 20th century.
It was the intention of the founders "to make it one of the world's great dictionaries" and to add new volumes to the initial scheme with each succeeding generation.
Volume I, which presents the biographies of individuals whose death or last known activity occurred in the years from 1000 to 1700, was published in 1966.

Therefore, the biographies included in volume 12 are those of persons who died in the last decade of the nineteenth century.
There are indexes providing the authority of the 450 contributors, occupational lists of persons included in the volume, geographical lists of persons by place of birth and by professional activity, and access to individuals mentioned in the volume.

 News@UofT -- DCB goes online with licensing deal -- Aug. 25, 2003
U of T and Université Laval, joint producers of the DCB, have signed a licensing agreement giving the federal Department of Canadian Heritage the right to publish the first 14 volumes of the dictionary online.
The current 14 volumes cover the years 1000 to 1920; a 15th bound volume, covering 1921 to 1930, is slated for publication by U of T Press and Les Presses de l’université Laval in 2005.
Having the biographies online will allow them to be published as they are ready, rather than having to wait for a full volume to be published in hard copy.

The biographies that appear in the Dictionary of Canadian Biography Online reproduce those that were originally commissioned by the Dictionary of Canadian Biography for its print version and were republished, some with minor corrections, in the Dictionary of Canadian Biography, Volumes I-XIV, CD-ROM (2000).
A selection of biographies from unpublished volumes are also included.
The Dictionary of Canadian Biography is a joint project of the University of Toronto and the Université Laval and presents the work of researchers and writers in many fields from across Canada and around the world.

It shattered even the life of William Osler, the doctor who was perhaps the greatest Canadian of his time; the death of his son with the Royal Artillery in 1917 destroyed Osler's spirit.

Because the eleven volumes of the Dictionary of Canadian Biography were published irregularly rather than sequentially, the development of a standardized format is not readily apparent.
It is, of course, its function as a national bibliography that makes the Dictionary of Canadian Biography most significant: it is a concrete sign of our maturity as a nation as well as a sign of the maturity of Canadian scholarship.
