Topic: Dictionary of Greek and Roman Geography

 Plutarch
Born at Chaeronea, in the Greek region of Boeotia, probably during the reign of the Roman Emperor Claudius, Mestrius Plutarch travelled widely in the Mediterranean world, later lecturing at Rome for an extended period and making friends with influential persons at Rome, to whom some of his later writings were dedicated.
His friend Lucius Mestrius Florus, a Roman consul, sponsored Plutarch as a Roman citizen and, late in life, the Emperor Trajan apparently appointed him as procurator of Achaea - a position that entitled him to wear the vestments and ornaments of a consul himself.
His best-known work is Lives of the Noble Greeks and Romans, a series of biographies of famous men, arranged in tandem to illuminate their common moral virtues or failings.

Apollonius.Net - White Syrians Of Aramaean Cappadocia
The boundary between the Lydian and Median empires was the [River] Halys, and this river in that part of its course where it flows northward [to the Black Sea, RS], separated the Syrii Cappadocae on the east of it from the Paphlagones on the west of it.
This name was often used by the Greeks, even at the time when it had become customary to designate all the inhabitants of the country by their native, or rather Persian name, Cappadoces; but it was applied more particularly to the inhabitants of the coastal district on the Euxine, between the rivers Halys and Iris.
From its coins we learn that in the reign of Caracalla the city became a Roman colony; afterwards, having for a time belonged to the empire of Palmyra, it was conquered by Aurelian, in A.D. 272, and Valens raised it to the rank of the capital of Cappadocia Secunda.

The~ Roman matrons mourned a year for him, as the avenger of womans honor, and a statue was erected to him on the Capitol.
On the other hand, we possess part of his correspondence with Cicero (two books out of an original nine), the authenticity of which, though formerly disputed, is now regarded as firmly established, with the possible exception of two of the letters.

Now the North of Europe, in the geography of Herodotus, comprehends the North of Asia, and we are irresistibly reminded of the gold-washings to the South of the Ural, among the mountains of Kousnetsk, and the ravines of the Lowlands of South Siberia.
In the geography of Ptolemy and the Rhipaean chain appears to be that gently rising ground which divides the rivers which flow into the Baltic from those which run to the Euxine.
ISSEDONES: In the Roman writers the usual form is "Essedones," a people living to the East of the Argippaei, and the most remote of the tribes of Central Asia with whom the Hellenic colonies on the Euxine had any communication.

On the whole, it is probable that the name was applied with little discrimination to all the native races who, prior to the invasion of the Samnites, occupied Campania and the inland mountainous region afterwards known as Samnium, and from thence came to be gradually applied to all the inhabitants of Central Italy.
