Process for producing halogen-containing unsaturated polyester - Patent 4569986   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
Such being the case, dicyclopentadiene which serves a useful purpose of not lowering the concentration of.alpha.,.beta.-ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid but also is low in cost has recently been attracting attention as an unsaturated starting material, and a fire-retardant polyester resin formed by halogenating an unsaturated polyester based on it has been published.
The dicyclopentadiene-terminated, unsaturated polyester which is to be halogenated in the present invention is obtained by the reaction among (a) dicyclopentadiene, (b) an.alpha.,.beta.-ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid or its anhydride and (c) a polyhydric alcohol, along with (d) tetrahydrophthalic acid or its anhydride, if desired, in accordance with the conventionally known method.
The above-described (a) dicyclopentadiene, (b).alpha.,.beta.-ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid and (c) polyhydric alcohol, along with other dicarboxylic acid as the case may be, are allowed to undergo reaction to produce an unsaturated polyester.

 Chemical Fact Sheets -- Dicyclopentadiene
Dicyclopentadiene is not a common ingredient of products used in homes.
It is also important to consider the length of exposure to the chemical; the amount of chemical exposure; and whether the chemical was inhaled, touched, or eaten.
If you develop symptoms after you’ve been exposed to dicyclopentadiene, or if you suspect that you may have been exposed to high levels of this chemical, a doctor can use tests of your lungs, kidneys and nervous system to assess possible damage.

Although the agency does not have enforcement authority related to these odor aspects, we are aware of the concerns and have asked BNSF to try to find effective methods of addressing the odor problems.
On March 8, 2001, officials from the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), which is a federal agency that evaluates health impacts from incidents such as this, participated in a public meeting at Scottsbluff City Hall.
At the meeting, Dr. Mike Allred, an ATSDR toxicologist, indicated that odors emanating from the site were from dicyclopentadiene, not benzene.

 Ferrocene
Cyclopentadiene undergoes a 4+2 cycloaddition to form dicyclopentadiene.
Dicyclopentadiene boils at 170C and cyclopentadiene boils at 42.5 C. For efficiency, the dicyclopentadiene dimer is thermally cracked using a fractional distillation apparatus in advance by the teaching assistant.
While this is usually done on the day of the experiment, we have found that cyclopentadiene may be stored without significant dimerization in a foil covered container in a freezer for several days.
