Language documentation is explicit if it enables insightful study of a langauge and culture when the language is extinct and when native speakers are no longer available as sources of creative, operational, structural and interpretative knowledge about the language.
However, the language has not been documented at all in the sense of the term used here, and the small amount of initial information in traditional format indicates that the language is very different from any of the surrounding Gur languages or the not-too-distant Kwa languages.
The language is at once a potential key to crucial aspects of the linguistic history of West Africa (indeed sub-Saharan Africa generally), but is also the possessor of a number of structural features that are exceedingly rare in African languages.

Lishán Didán, at the northeastern extreme of this area, is somewhat intelligible with the Jewish Neo-Aramaic languages of Hulaula (spoken further south, in Iranian Kurdistan) and Lishanid Noshan (formerly spoken around Kirkuk, Iraq).
The dialects of the two clusters are intelligible to one another, and most of the differences are due to receiving loanwords from different languages: Persian, Kurdish and Turkish languages especially.
However, uprooted from their homes, and thrown together with so many different language groups in the fledgling nation, Lishán Didán began to be replaced in the speech of younger generations by Modern Hebrew.

The purpose of this presentation is to give a detailed set of maps showing the location of the home territory where each variety is spoken and the linguistic relationship of one to the other, according to the present state of our knowledge.
In deciding which speech forms constitute separate languages, the emphasis is more sociolinguistic in nature than purely linguistic, though of course in most cases the two converge.
The starting point for language locations is based on the Global Ministry Mapping System 1997, but extensive revisions have been made to that in the process of preparing this work.

The pilot project aims to develop model documentation for the endangered language Ega, the westernmost Kwa language, a linguistic isolate located in a Kru enclave, with a few hundred remaining speakers, and an unusual linguistic complexity which promises new insight into the history of the Niger-Congo languages.
One of the basic documentation materials is an outline questionnaire on language typology, which was developed in a joint DAAD project with Université de Cocody, Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire from 1997 to 2000.
The questionnaire document type is not used as a `Procrustes bed' but is developed in relation to specific languages by linguistic experts in the project; this is the first task commissioned from the local scientific consultants at Université de Cocody.

In the second chapter we will describe the features that traditional multimedia foreign language courseware should have, while in the third chapter we will give the description of the voice driven exercises we are developing to perform oral activities.
A multimedia foreign language course should lead gradually the student to be autonomously able to communicate in the four fundamental linguistic skills: listening, reading, talking and writing.
For example the user may be forced to go through a lesson before passing to the next one (linear), but he may be free to choose the listening section before grammar (hypertextual and modal), or he may be forced to go back the "dialogue" page to choose the "reading" section (hierarchical, at a lower level).

The focus is on an endangered Kwa language isolate (called Ega by scientists and Dies by speakers) surrounded by Kru (Dida) in the Ivory Coast, West Africa; a sequel in the form of a main phase project would plan to investigate two other endangered Kwa languages (Betibe and Essouma).
Because of the deprecated status of the language, it is essential to use appropriate strategies, for instance via female Dida/Ega speakers; the latter strategy was used in establishing contacts in preparation for the present proposal.
The study of endangered languages is not a young discipline, and the involvement of experienced researchers is essential at many levels: for resource planning, for work in the field, for linguistic and ethnographic analysis, and for consultation on the design of ergonomically usable computational tools.
