 Digimorph - Didelphis virginiana (Opossum)
This clade (Didelphis + Philander) is nested within a larger clade that includes Lutreolina, the thick-tailed opossum; Chironectes, the water opossum; and Metachirus, the brown 'four-eyed' opossum (Jansa and Voss, 2000; Voss and Jansa, 2003).
Didelphis virginiana first appears in the fossil record in the Pliocene of South America and is first seen in North America during the Pleistocene, having crossed the Panamanian land bridge during the Great American Interchange (McManus, 1974).
Didelphis virginiana is mostly nocturnal and occupies a variety of habitats, but prefers wet areas of its distribution (McManus, 1974).

The Marsupial Didelphis albiventris is an Improbable Host of Pa The Marsupial Didelphis albiventris is an Improbable Host of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis in an Endemic Area of Paracoccidioidomycosis in Minas Gerais, Brazil
To determine whether Didelphis albiventris is naturally infected with Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, 20 specimens of this mammal were studied by both direct cultivation of their viscera (spleen, liver and lungs) and by inoculation of Swiss mice by the intraperitoneal route with a suspension of fragments of these viscera.
Didelphis marsupialis, one of the most common species, has been found to be naturally infected with Histoplasma capsulatum on several occasions (Taylor and Shaclette 1962).

Technical Abstract: An unidentified isolate of a Sarcocystis falcatula-like parasite was obtained from the lungs of budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) fed sporocysts from a naturally-infected South American opossum, Didelphis albiventris from Brazil.
Four captive budgerigars fed sporocysts from the opossum intestine died of acute sarcocystosis 8, 10, and 12 days after oral linoculation (DAI); 1 budgerigar was killed 12 DAI when it was lethargic.
Results of this study indicated that the South American opossum, D. albiventris, is a definitive host for yet another S. falcatula-like parasite.

Fossil remains indicate the virginia opossum lived during the Pleistocene Period, in what is referred to as the “Sangamon Interglacial Stage.” The earliest remains were found in South America.
Today’s virginia opossum probably evolved from the common opossum (Didelphis marsupialis) late in the Pleistocene Period.
The common opossum (Didelphis marsupialis) is found today in Central and South America.

Scientists at the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center and a University in La Plata, Argentina provide conclusive evidence that S. falcatula is found in Argentina and that the Argentinian opossum, Didelphis albiventris, is another definitive host for it.
Technical Abstract: Two isolates of Sarcocystis falcatula were obtained from the lungs of budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) fed sporocysts from two naturally-infected South American opossums (Didelphis albiventris).
Thus, South American opossum, D. albiventris, is a definitive host for S. falcatula.

The National Opossum Society exists for the benefit and improvement in care of the Didelphis genus, particularly Didelphis virginiana and Didelphis marsupialis.

The National Opossum Society supports clinical research that strives to improve the health of the Didelphis genus or the individual opossum.
