Cuckoo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Cuculidae or cuckoos are a family of near passerine birds.
The cuckoo egg hatches earlier and the chick grows faster and in most cases the chick evicts the eggs or young of the host species.
The family also includes the American cuckoos, the roadrunners, the anis, and the coucals, none of which are brood parasites.

The Cuculidae or cuckoos are an order of near passerine birds, many of which are brood parasites in the nests of birds of other species.
The coucals are not nest parasites and, unlike many cuckoos, lay their eggs on the ground.
The Cuculiformes order, in addition to the cuckoos, also includes the turacos (perhaps better considered as a separate order, Musophagiformes) and the unique Hoatzin, which was previously classified in the Galliformes.

ADULT BROOD PARASITES FEEDING NESTLINGS AND FLEDGLINGS OF THEIR OWN SPECIES: A REVIEW
Nest predation, presumably by female cuckoos, is more likely to occur if the parasitic egg has been ejected.
The question remains whether the provisioning of young by brood par- asites is common enough to be considered a strategy or whether it is simply trivial behavior.

Namib Desert, Walvis Bay & Etosha Bird Watching Report
Although we’d seen a few species on the drive from the airport, this was our first taste of birding in Namibia — and the rolling hills covered in acacia woodland are an excellent place to start.
The birding was diverse, with excellent looks in the late afternoon light at many species including Dideric Cuckoo (male displaying to a female), Groundscraper Thrush, Icterine Warbler (on passage), Blacksmith Lapwing, Pearl-spotted Owlet (Margaret was an owl-enthusiast), Monteiro’s Hornbill (our first near-endemic bird species) and Black-chested Snake-eagle.
We had the privilege of a seldom-experienced dusk drive, with breathtaking views of Elephant, Spotted Hyaena, and a truly memorable sunset with lines of Giraffe breaking the orange horizon.

A few of us had a good view of the front of the bird and we realised it was a Red-chested Cuckoo, a bird we hadn't considered we would see on our trip to The Gambia.
Suddenly a cuckoo was called, tracked down and identified as African Cuckoo, another good bird to get, with a bill showing much more yellow than its European cousin.
I found a cuckoo species in one of these trees and shouted 'there's a cuckoo in that bush' which necessitated the boat doing a slow turn so we could go back and check out the bird.
