Didier's qualifying sessions were marked by two accidents so that he had to start from the penultimate row on the grid.
Didier reached a ninth place but, unlike Villeneuve who retired with an accident due to resolving tyres, he was able to keep the car on the road.
Didier Pironi, Prost, Laffite, Giacomelli, Patrese and Villeneuve were fined $10000 because they also took part in the blockade at Zolder 1981, the others had to pay $5000.

Teamed with the fearsome Gilles Villeneuve, Pironi was rather shaded in his first season with Ferrari; for someone so preoccupied with becoming the first French driver to win the Formula One title, the events of this year may have played a role in the turbulent and unhappy 1982 campaign.
Pironi's friendship with senior members in the team resulted in his dubious story of "engine problems" for both cars gaining widespread currency, much to Villeneuve's chagrin.
Pironi survived, but injuries to his legs meant he never raced again, being subsequently killed in a powerboat accident five years later.

Pironi ofcourse was a star at Tyrrell and Ligier winning for both teams and after a year ajusting to Ferrari he starred to make the team his own.
Of course Pironi's moves at Imola had upset Villeneuve and it was his efforts to remove Pironi from the top of the times at Zolder the following weekend that resulted in his death.
Pironi would have won the title that year(which was a very wild controversial and violent season) but he smashed his legs at Hockenheim in a very similar accident to the one that killed his team mate.

Villeneuve, expecting Pironi to stay behind in team formation, eased up in the last few laps to give a grandstand finish for the cheering tifosi.
Pironi, however, had other ideas, the Frenchman passing his unsuspecting teammate on the last lap and taking the flag, leaving a furious Villeneuve in second.
I stuck with Pironi though, and always thought he dealt with the pressure of leading the Ferrari team very well under the circumstances (the circumstances being that Gilles was very much the darling of the Ferrari team and their maniacal supporters).

And the exciting and emotional ending was much needed: 1982 was indeed a tragic year for the sport because the death of Villeneuve and Paletti and the serious accident that almost cost the life of Didier Pironi, who was involved in the three incidents in one way or another.
