'Head' games | The San Diego Union-Tribune
Van Cauwelaert addresses the daunting subject in a refreshingly direct manner, inserting the existential question within the concrete reality of a suspense-ridden, action-laden thriller.
The scenario is thus set for van Cauwelaert to explore a theme present in his previous works: the inextricable relationship between one's life, one's identity and one's past – be it real or imagined.
It is not surprising then, that van Cauwelaert falls back upon easy stereotypes, such as the solitary scientist, his requisite love interest (a woman hardened by life and newly mollified by love), the kind stranger (an old and lonely doctor, eager to help).

Amazon.fr : One-Way: A Novel: Livres en anglais: Didier Van Cauwelaert,Mark Polizzotti   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Van Cauwelaert's tale of an orphan's quest for cultural identity won the Prix Goncourt when it was published in 1994, the year after France passed laws restricting immigration and the rights of current immigrants.
When Aziz's narration is interrupted by an excerpt from Jean-Pierre's journal, the book is at its heartbreaking, hilarious best, perhaps because Van Cauwelaert is freed from his uneducated hero and allowed full use of high-minded absurdity, which he both revels in and pokes fun at.
Through Polizzotti's rhapsodic translation from the original French, worlds both capricious and coarse, unreal and unpredictable collide in a lyrical ode to the power of storytelling that is as fanciful as any fable, as perplexing as any paradox.

Van Cauwelaert's trademark absurdist-existential angst is evident again in this follow-up to his Prix Goncourt–winning debut, One-Way.
Didier Van Cauwelaert's Out of My Head, translated by Mark Polizzotti from the French, (Other Press, 2004) could easily be judged by the fact that the work is not intact in its original state.
However, most of the problems I found in reading Van Cauwelaert's second novel had nothing to do with a quirkily placed word, or perhaps a dull passage that might have been exciting in its original Romance tongue.

 REVIEWS IN BRIEF / One-Way
By Didier Van Cauwelaert, translated from the French by Mark Polizzotti
The only world he's ever known is snatched from under his feet as he is delivered by a bumbling, heartbroken handler back to the country from which he never came.
Wielding a crackerjack pen and a sharp eye for our cultural sensitivities, Van Cauwelaert monkeys with the modern conception of national identity and with the more personal dilemma of knowing one's place and one's purpose.

 The Believer - Didier van Cauwelaert's ONE-WAY
Way back in the early 1990s, the French, fretting that their Frenchness was growing dilute (as we at the time fretted too, and watched Pat Buchanan on TV), passed edicts to preserve the imperiled patrie, to cinch up the borders, send the swarthy and unpapered back to the lands that papered them.
In response Didier van Cauwelaert penned Un Aller Simple, which won the 1994 Prix Goncourt.
