Dido class cruiser - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Dido class was a class of sixteen (including the Bellona sub-class) light cruisers built for the Royal Navy.
The enthusiasm felt for them by the Board of Admiralty was borne out by good results in action and the only real problem with the type was shortage of gun-mountings and a need to stiffen them forward to take the weight of the forward turrets.
The class were intended to be armed with ten 5.25 inch (133 mm) guns in five twin turrets, but a shortage of the guns, due to difficulties in manufacturing them, led to the first group being armed with eight 5.25 inch guns in four twin turrets.

In April 1943, Dido was based at Algiers but she left later for the UK for a much needed refit.

Cruisers were large enough to fend off attacks from smaller surface ships and self-sufficient enough to roam far from their home bases.
Auxiliary cruisers were used to fill gaps in their long-range lines or provide escort for other cargo ships, although they generally proved to be useless in this role because of their low speed, feeble firepower and lack of armor.
In the years since the launch of the Ticonderoga the class has received a number of upgrades that have dramatically improved their capabilities for anti-submarine and land attack (using the Tomahawk missile), and today the name is not mis-applied at all.

Cruiser - ikiW   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-08-19)
A cruiser (From Dutch Kruiser, "something that crosses") is a classification of large warship.
In modern warfare the cruiser has virtually disappeared, supplanted in all roles by the destroyer, but certain ships are still named cruisers for reasons of military function.
Cruisers were ships of the line, or even frigates or smaller vessels, which were assigned a role largely independent from the fleet.

She was a fast cruiser, displacing 10,635 tonnes, and with an intended sea speed of 32.25 knots, reaching a maximum speed of thirty-three knots.
As with battlecruisers, light cruisers were intended to be fast enough to avoid being hit, negating the need for immensely thick armour like that found on the battleships of the day.
After these repairs, she was re-attached to the 18th Cruiser Squadron, and on 18 November left Faslane Naval Base, on the Clyde, escorting the troop convoy WS4B as far as Freetown (now Sierra Leone) before returning to Scapa Flow on 12 November.
