La majeure partie des régions constituant la France actuelle fut unifiée sous Clovis en 486 (réunion sous la domination franque, ou regnum francorum, des Alamans, des Burgondes et des Wisigoths au nord des Pyrénées).

France had been in a state of civil war for too long, and at last there was a legitemate king who was in his majority, and had heirs to continue his line.
The problem of France’s old enemy Spain remained, as the country was still weak from the years of anarchy and was vulnerable to attack.
France could not afford to have a full scale war against the mightiest European nation, and so it contented itself with trying to take over the Spainish road, leading from Spain to the Netherlands, which was a vital road for troops.

PARIS (AP) — The death toll in France from August's blistering heat wave has reached nearly 15,000, according to a government-commissioned report released Thursday, surpassing a prior tally by more than 3,000.
The bulk of the victims — many of them elderly — died during the height of the heat wave, which brought suffocating temperatures of up to 104 degrees in a country where air conditioning is rare.
Two INSERM researchers who delivered the report were to continue their analysis of deaths to determine what the actual cause was for the spike in mortality, the Health Ministry said.

For Die, in southeastern France, sandwiched dramatically between magnificent, fl pine forests and the sheer, limestone cliffs of the Vercors massif, is an all-but-forgotten town of Roman arches and fortified walls dating back to the first century A.D. Surprisingly, even the most well-traveled French people I met seemed unaware of Die's historic charms.
To celebrate the arrival of the sheep, the Die town fathers organize La Fête de la Transhumance, seven days of films, lectures, gallery exhibits and concerts, ranging from rock and jazz to madrigals and troubadours, that attracts visitors from all over France, the rest of Europe and, last year, three Americans, including myself.
Die, at the confluence of the Meyrosse and Drôme rivers, was once a busy administrative centre of the Roman Empire (Its name comes from the Latin, Dea Augusta Vocontiorum, or Good Goddess of the Coconces.).
