Die Meistersinger was completed at Triebschen in 1867, and premiered in Munich on June 21 the following year.
Aspects of Die Sieger were finally absorbed into Parsifal, which depicts a peculiar, "Wagnerized" version of Christianity; for instance, the ritual of transubstantiation in the Communion is subtly reinterpreted, becoming something closer to a pagan ritual than a Christian one.
Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (The Mastersingers of Nuremberg) is Wagner's only comedy (apart from his early and forgotten Das Liebesverbot) and one of the lengthiest operas still performed.

Wagner called Jews ugly "freaks of nature", "blabbering" incomprehensibly and in shrill voices, egoistically devoted to profit and incapable of expressing passion when speaking to non-Jews, and, in spite of their alleged wealth, unable to shed their primitive roots (see Das Judenthum in der Musik for details).

In Die Feen and Lohengrin the test involves not asking a question: the human partner is not allowed to fathom the mystery surrounding the otherworldly being who has entered his or her world.
In the case of Die Feen, immortality has the last word, thereby asserting a priority that is puzzling and at odds with Wagner's "sympathy with death." As such, this highlights the change in Wagner's thinking since Die Hochzeit.
Die Feen was the only one of Wagner's thirteen completed operas not to be performed during his lifetime.

In 1833 he became chorus master at the Würzburg theatre and wrote the text and music of his first opera, Die Feen; this remained unheard, but his next, Das Liebesverbot, written in 1833, was staged in 1836.
Die fliegende Holländer ('The Flying Dutchman'), given the next year, was less well received, though a much tauter musical drama, beginning to move away from the 'number opera' tradition and strong in its evocation of atmosphere, especially the supernatural and the raging seas (inspired by the stormy trip from Riga).
The first two Ring operas, Das Rheingold and Die Walküre, were given in Munich, on Ludwig's insistence, in 1869 and 1870; Wagner however was anxious to have a special festival opera house for the complete cycle and spent much energy trying to raise money for it.

In `Die Deutsche Oper,' published in June 1834, Wagner began the practice, typical for him but unusual at that time, of working out a specific aesthetic or theory in print before trying it out in music.
Then, in Die Kunst der Zukunft (The Artwork of the Future) and Oper und Drama, he elaborated at length the cultural, aesthetic, and (for the creator) practical consequences of this position.

Of course during his lifetime he was the subject of many attacks and maybe he feared to be the victim of ridicule with critics dissecting every bar of Die Feen, Das Liebesverbot and Rienzi and looking for influences of other composers.
Rienzi and Liebesverbot had been staged while he lived but Die Feen was only known by a few selections and he never took pains to have his first opera performed at a time when he could easily have done it.
Die Feen was premiered 5 years after his death and then led a rather undistinguished life of a few performances.

He also argued that the Old Testament had nothing to do with the New Testament, that the God of Israel was not the same God as the father of Jesus, and that the Ten Commandments lacked the mercy and love of Christian teachings.
During the latter-part of the 20th century, public perception of Wagner increasingly centered, especially in the United States, on his anti-semitism, due in large part to an event that began fifty years after the composer's death: the appropriation of his music and name by the Nazi party during the 1930s.
During the late 20th century, scholars such as Robert Gutman advanced the claim that Wagner's anti-semitism was not limited to his articles, and that the operas contain hidden anti-Semitic messages.

Performances of his operas tend to be very well-attended, despite being a stretch for the resources of most opera companies.
Although they are commonly broadcast on government-owned radio and television stations, attempts at staging public performances have been halted by protests, especially by Holocaust survivors.
For instance, after Daniel Barenboim conducted a passage from Tristan and Isolde as an encore at the 2001 Israel Festival, a parliamentary committee urged a boycott of the conductor, and an initially scheduled performance of Die Walküre had to be withdrawn.

Island of Freedom - Richard Wagner
During the 1830s, Wagner held a series of conducting posts with small theatrical companies, and he wrote two operas, Die Feen (The Fairies, 1834) and Das Liebesverbot (Forbidden Love; after Shakespeare's Measure for Measure); the latter was performed without much success in 1836 in Magdeburg.
When he turned to opera he moved easily from the German romantic style of Weber and Marschner (in Die Feen) to the Italian style of Rossini and Bellini (in Das Liebesverbot) to the grand opera style of Spontini and Meyerbeer (in Rienzi).
Although Wagner varied his treatment in each opera, the means of redemption is typically some combination of increased awareness on the part of the flawed male protagonist and the love and instinctive vision of his female counterpart.
