Die Forelle, D.550, is a splendid example of the composer's ability to turn a smug, moralizing poem into a great song, through the invention of a melody that has the directness of folksong, and of a richly pictorial accompaniment.
Schubert clearly recognized the Ahit@ potential of Die Forelle, and he therefore chose to use the tune as the basis of a set of variations in the "Trout" Quintet—perhaps his single best-loved piece of chamber music.
An die Musik (D.547), Schubert's hymn to his art, composed in March 1817, is not only one of his most famous songs but one of the world's best-loved art songs.

However, the original song, "Die Forelle," was so popular that it was published several times within Schubert's lifetime - once in 1820, again in 1825, and again in 1827, when it was assigned Opus 32.
Schubert decided not only to integrate "Die Forelle", but to use the song for a theme and variations in the fourth of five movements.
And while the flashing currents of piano accompaniment in the original song momentarily veer into minor mode (as the poem's fisherman muddies the clear water and hooks the fish), Schubert opted for the serene beginning of "Die Forelle" as his fourth movement's main theme, letting the more complex emotions unfold in the later variations.

More songs poured out, including "Der Wanderer" and "Die Forelle," and instrumental pieces - inventive piano sonatas, some tuneful, Rossinian overtures, the Fifth and Sixth Symphonies - began to show increased harmonic subtlety.
Reasons for their abiding popularity rest not only in the direct appeal of Schubert's melody and the general attractiveness of his idiom but also in his unfailing ability to capture musically both the spirit of a poem and much of its external detail.
Both identify nature with human suffering, "Die schöne Müllerin" evoking a pastoral sound-language of walking, flowing and flowering, and "Winterreise" a more intensely Romantic, universal, profoundly tragic quality.

Hanchard thrilled the audience with three of her original compositions including “Here In This Place”, a celebration of the joy of two people meeting; “Spirit Song” a blue and almost ethereal utterance, then closed with “October Victory”, a soulful plea for rational thought in a world on the brink of war.
Returning to the original theme of the afternoon, Schubert’s Die Forelle, the Trout Quintet in A Major, the Concordia ensemble played with keen precision and varying depths of expression as they performed the popular and colorful work.
