Die Frau ohne Schatten - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Die Frau ohne Schatten (The Woman without a Shadow) is an opera by Richard Strauss with a German libretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthal.
While not initially as popular as some of his other operas, many people today think it to be his finest work in the genre.
The five principal roles in Die Frau ohne Schatten border on unsingable in their extraordinary vocal demands, which perhaps contributes to the rarity of performances.

 STRAUSS Die Frau Ohne Schatten
The occasion was so successful it led to a new staging of Frau during opening weeks of the rebuilt Staatsoper in November 1955 shortly after which conductor and cast, in their eagerness to have the work recorded, agreed to do so without fee.
The cast is promising: Deborah Voight as the Empress, Ben Heppner The Emperor, Hanna Schwarz (again) as the Nurse, Franz Grundheber as Barak and Sabine Hass as his wife, with the Dresden State Opera Chorus and Orchestra directed by the late Giuseppe Sinopoli.
Those who feel Die Frau ohne Schatten is a very special work surely will wish to investigate the new Golden Melodram issue of "bleeding hunks" from the opera in spite of the premium price and dated sound.

Although Richard Strauss's Die Frau ohne Schatten must certainly qualify as one of the rarer items in the standard operatic repertory, this writer has encountered it with amazing frequency during a lifetime of opera-going: Twice in San Francisco and New York, and once in Los Angeles and London.
For one thing, Die Frau ohne Schatten is a major "conductor's opera," not to mention a prime vehicle for testing the imaginations and creative skills of set, costume and lighting designers.
The intellectual content of Die Frau is feeble, and I would even question the book's literary merit, despite von Hofmannsthal's nearly sacrosanct status in the operatic world.

Of enormous interest is another discontinued set, the first recording made of the "complete" Frau, recorded in 1955 after a series of Vienna State Opera performances.
Another Frau essential in any Strauss opera collection as it is the only currently available complete recording is London's with Sir Georg Solti conducting, reportedly the most expensive recording ever made.
Recorded in 1989 and 1991, it was a major project of the Hungarian conductor whose love of the opera is apparent throughout.

Hugo von Hofmannsthal's libretto is riddled with symbolic characters — a singing falcon, a one-eyed peasant, an emperor who turns to stone and a waterfall that appears and disappears out of nowhere, not to mention the titular woman without a shadow — so many, in fact, that the opera needs lots of directorial sympathy.
Of the four Die Frau ohne Schatten productions I've seen in the last few years, Wilson's serves the work better than themore straightforward attempts to tell this complicated story about an ethereal empress who must acquire a shadow from a human being before she can bear children.
To concentrate on the opera's plot is to invite unwanted associations with the anti-abortion movement (a phenomenon wholly unanticipated at the opera's 1919 premiere) and to prompt unflattering comparisons to modern science fiction's meticulously established rules governing alternate universes.

The relationship between Eiji Oue and the Minnesota Orchestra lasted all of seven years (1995-2002), during which many discs were made with the audiophile label Reference Recordings, several of which were nominated for Grammy Awards.
The Suite from Die Frau ohne Schatten, arranged by Erich Leinsdorf, is not commonly encountered in the concert hall - usually one finds Der Rosenkavalier Suite instead, in its different arrangements.
Die Frau ohne Schatten is a problematic opera because of its subject matter and its convoluted plot, but the music itself is the thing and there's enough music in this to have Erich Leinsdorf decide to make a suite out of it stiched together from the orchestral interludes that pepper the opera.

Thinking of Strauss's music, especially his operas and especially Die Frau ohne Schatten (the woman without shadows), puts my salivary glands into the kind of overdrive they usually rev into at a great New Orleans Italian-Creole restaurant.
What strikes the listener immediately - and I mean from the very first measures of the opera – is the genius of Strauss as one of the greatest orchestrators ever, the creator not only of daring, powerful, and beautiful new sounds, but of sounds dramatically right.

Richard Strauss' DIE FRAU ohne SCHATTEN (The Woman Without a Shadow) opened at the Chicago Lyric Opera in November of 1984 following a year and a half of production work by Chase and his craftsmen and film technicians.
