Those who have seen any of the three "Die Hard" films know that the franchise is less about intricate plot twists and intellectual stimulation than Bruce Willis running around and blowing things up under the guise of hard-boiled NYPD detective John McClane.
Die Hard Trilogy 2 opens with a rendered cinematic of McClane lazing about in bed, once again on suspension for indeterminate reasons.

Die Hard defined the concept of tension, with McClane trapped in a building, maybe in elevator shafts, trying to kill the terrorists, save his wife, and destroy the building.
Die Hard 2 started the mayhem all over again, as McClane found himself up against terrorists trying to rescue a drug kingpin, taking over Dulles International Airport, grounding all airplanes and leaving them trapped in the air and running out of fuel, AND screwing the passengers up in the process.
As for the movies: DIE HARD is an influential action classic, now and forever; DIE HARD 2 is not quite as good but still a worthy sequel, and a lot of fun to watch; and DIE HARD WITH A VENGEANCE is the least of the series, generic and incoherent despite its skillful action sequences.

Die Hard's elegant, masterful script was richly textured and deeply layered, providing the model for the genre.
Though the sequel is at its worst when trying, in the most banal ways, to be Die Hard (Bonnie Bedelia has a thankless cameo as Holly McClane, while the presence of Die Hard characters Richard Thornburg (William Atherton) and Sgt. Al Powell (Reginald Vel Johnson) is extremely forced), the script breathlessly sets up McClane's adventures.
