Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (The Mastersingers of Nuremberg) is an opera in three acts, written and composed by Richard Wagner.
Eva is obviously besotted with Walther, but informs him that her father, the goldsmith and Meistersinger Veit Pogner, has arranged to give her hand in marriage to the victor of the guild's song contest on St. John's day (Midsummer's day), tomorrow.
Although Die Meistersinger is a comedy, it also elucidates Wagner’s ideas on the place of music in society, on renunciation of the Will, and of the solace that music brings in a world full of “Wahn” (which may be translated into English as "Illusion", "madness", "folly" or "self-deception").

Meistersinger - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Meistersinger (German for "master-singer") was a German lyric poet of the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries, who carried on and developed the traditions of the medieval Minnesingers.
By this time, the Meistersinger school had spread all over south and central Germany; and isolate guilds were to be found farther north, at Magdeburg, Breslau Görlitz, and Danzig.
The literary value of the Meistersinger poetry was hardly in proportion to the large part it played in the life of the German towns of the 15th and 16th centuries.

Die Meistersinger also marks one of the few times that Wagner, the intrepid futurist, permitted himself to look backward — not only to 16th-century Nuremberg and to the shoemaker-musician Hans Sachs (who really existed), but to some operatic conventions he had mostly abandoned.
For Die Meistersinger has real arias in it —; the "Fliedermonolog," the "Wahnmonolog" and, of course, the "Prize Song" itself — and, in the bejeweled quintet "Selig wie die Sonne," Wagner created a genuine ensemble piece that Donizetti would have recognized.
Still, the evidence suggests that Die Meistersinger was an unusually difficult opera for Wagner to bring to life; he labored on the Prelude and Act I alone for more than four years.

Heavy chords introduce the motiv of The Meistersinger on the full orchestra, and after it is worked up at some length, there follows the expressive and tender theme of Waking Love, on the flute and clarinet.
The original Meistersinger returns upon the trombones, viola, and 'cello; and the violins excitedly elaborate it until they sing, with the 'cello, clarinet, and horn, Love Confessed, while the other instruments insist upon The Meistersinger.
As he tells her he has failed, the Meistersinger is heard, and the harp introduces the Hymn to Spring in the orchestra.

The Meistersinger and (not to forget!) the masterly soloists with the (pardon!) male-heart-frequency-accelerating female interpreter of the "Ständchen" (Serenade): they all can sing, this goes undoubtedly without saying.

'Die Meistersinger' -- neatly trimmed down and not missing a beat / Brainerd's singing anchors opera
There are no small Wagner operas, but even by those standards "Die Meistersinger" is a whopper -- a five-hour celebration of artistic innovation, tradition and young love that blends oversize pageantry with intimate personal drama.
The idea of a small company taking on a behemoth like "Meistersinger" is not as outlandish as it seems after all.
In contrast to the drastically foreshortened "Ring" cycle that the company produced last year, the "Meistersinger" reduction is a matter of nips and tucks rather than wholesale chopping.

His only significant essay in the field of comedy was made in "Die Meister-singer," and this is as faithful to the old conception of comedy as the dramas mentioned are to that of tragedy.
There is no doubt in my mind but that Wagner's purpose in " Die Meistersinger " was to celebrate the triumph of the natural, poetical impulse, stimulated by healthy emotion and communion with nature, over pedantry and hide-bound conservatism.
In the larger study of the opera made in another place, I have attempted to show that the contest is in reality the one which is always waging between the principles of romanticism and classicism, a contest which is essentially friendly and necessary to progress.

Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (Wagner) - Synopsis
In this noble passage, in which the "Prize Song" soars above the various themes typical of the masters, the new ideal seems to be borne to its triumph upon the shoulders of the conservative forces which, won over at last, have espoused its cause with all their sturdy energy.
This concluding passage in the Vorspiel thus brings out with great eloquence the inner significance of "Die Meistersinger." In whatever the great author and composer of this work wrote for the stage, there always was an ethical meaning back of the words and music.
In more ways than one the "Prize Song" is a mainstay of "Die Meistersinger." It has been heard in the previous scene of the third act, not only when Walther rehearses it for Sachs, but also in the quintet.

Christian Thielemann proved himself the heir to von Karajan and Kempe in a Meistersinger of rare depth, humanity and wit, notwithstanding Wolfgang Wagner's dull, conventional and ugly staging.
Robert Holl's dour, uncharismatic Sachs, Robert Dean Smith's "correct" but unglamorous Stolzing, Emily Magee's brittle and slightly tarty Eva, and Clemens Bieber's thin-toned and somewhat elderly-looking David were all perfectly acceptable but hardly of the quality that one expects at the world's premier Wagnerian address.
The vocal level of the opening Meistersinger proved to be fairly representative of what was to follow in Lohengrin and the Ring — all evidence of a crisis in contemporary Wagnerian singing.

Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg for the most part is certainly one of Wagner’s lighter operas, and although I think it would be going a bit far to describe it as a comedy, as the accompanying booklet does, it certainly has its humorous moments.
