		'Die Walk�re' as part of the complete Ring cycle was first performed in 1876 at the festive opening of the Bayreuth Festival Theatre.
		Of the four Ring operas, 'Die Walk�re' is the one that stands most comfortably on its own, and it is very popular with audiences.

		Much against Wagner's wishes, 'Das Rheingold' and 'Die Walküre' were premiered in Munich before the rest of the tetralogy was finished - King Ludwig insisted on this 'preview' while the furious composer looked on helplessly in the face of the King's privileges and his own dependence on the King's funds.

		Die Walk�re (April 7) peaked in Act I, where John Macurdy's surly Hunding had good reason to fear the high voltage generated by Pl�cido Domingo's full-blooded Siegmund and Deborah Voigt's bright (in both senses of the word) Sieglinde.
		A paradox of the "Ring" in general, and "Die Walk�re" in particular, is that Wagner lavished so much heroic, ennobling music on characters who are truly despicable.
		With all of G�tterd�mmerung one had again the feeling, as in Das Rheingold and Act I of Die Walk�re, that this was about as good as it gets.
