Die Walküre (The Valkyrie) is the second of the four operas that comprise The Ring of the Nibelung, by Richard Wagner.
It premiered at the Munich Court Theatre on June 26, 1870, with August Kindermann as Wotan, Heinrich Vogl as Siegmund, Therese Vogl as Sieglinde, and Sophie Stehle as Brünnhilde.
Wotan protests that he requires a free hero to aid his plans, but Fricka retorts that Siegmund is not a free hero, but an unwitting pawn of Wotan.
DieWalkure (The Valkyries), the second of the tetralogy, begins with the adulterous love affair between the twins Siegmund and Sieglinde.
Certainly the MET’s traditional staging DieWalkure invokes every operatic cliché associated with The Ring like armor-wearing, spear-bearing, large women screaming on a bleak, mountainous landscape, but within a few seconds of the MET orchestra’s brilliant playing, all is accepted.
DieWalkure, with the same cast, will be presented live as part of the MET’s radio broadcast series on Saturday, April 3rd.

Die Walküre: opera in three acts, Part II of 'Der Ring des Nibelungen', libretto and music by Richard Wagner (1813-1883), preliminary premiere 26th June 1870 at the Court Theatre in Munich together with 'Das Rheingold'.
The score of 'Die Walküre' was completed in 1856, but work on the next instalment, 'Siegfried', had to stop in the middle of the second act as Wagner had other pressing commitments in the form of 'Tristan und Isolde' and 'Die Meistersinger'.
Much against Wagner's wishes, 'Das Rheingold' and 'Die Walküre' were premiered in Munich before the rest of the tetralogy was finished - King Ludwig insisted on this 'preview' while the furious composer looked on helplessly in the face of the King's privileges and his own dependence on the King's funds.

Walkure> has always been my least favorite of the Ring operas, but the recent DVD release of this work on the Deutsche Grammophon label (073 011-9) has done much to change my mind.
For years, the Furtwangler(walkure- VPO) was my standard, along with Solti's(when in that mood), though I have yet to hear Keilberth's new set which is garnering almost irrational praise(though at $100 for each opera, better be great.
