When I took a driving tour of central Luxembourg, I stayed overnight in Diekirch, one of the larger towns in the country.
Diekirch, like much of Luxembourg, was clean and friendly, and the inhabitants seemed to like living life at a nice, slow pace.
Tucked very deeply in the middle of one block is Diekirch's main historical structure, the Church of St. Lawrence (St. Laurent Church) which is so well protected by other buildings that getting a decent exterior picture of it was next to impossible.

 National Museum of Military History, Luxembourg
The "National Museum of Military History" (NMMH) emerged from the Diekirch Historical Museum (opened in 1984), which was primarily dedicated to the "Battle of the Bulge" in Luxembourg in winter 1944/45.
The key topic of the museum remains the balanced and objective historical representation of the military operations in the Ardennes from the American, German, and Civilian points of view.
The museum's core-piece is without doubt the detailed reconstruction of the night-time crossing of the river Sûre (Sauer) at Diekirch on January 18th, 1945 by soldiers of the 5th U.S. Infantry division.

The entrance hall also features remains of German and American aircraft that crashed in the surroundings of Diekirch in addition to some typical equipement (parachutes, flying suit, different bombs, oxygen tanks, aluminium screening chaff and pictures of several U.S. units and aircraft that were engaged in the Bulge sector.
The soldier is from the 17th Airborne Division that fought north of Diekirch in late January 1945.
The two soldiers who died on January 19, 1945 near Diekirch, who were identified, and whose pictures are displayed, are both buried at the German military cemetery of Sandweiler, Luxembourg, right across from the U.S. cemetery of Hamm.

In 1982, a small group of military history enthusiasts and militaria collectors founded the "Dikricher Geschichtsfrenn" (Diekirch Historical Society), a non-profit organization, entirely composed of volunteers, that was to become the platform for the future Diekirch military museum.
Supported by the local city authorities and the Luxembourg army, the early museum under its initial denomination of "Diekirch Historical Museum" was opened to the public in September 1984 on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the liberation of Luxembourg and the "Battle of the Bulge" (BoB) or "Ardennes Offensive".
Presently, the museum is supervised and administrated by a joint board, comprising delegates of the Diekirch Historical Society, the City of Diekirch, and the Luxembourg Government.

Roland Gaul, gives a glimpse of some of their experience and three Diekirch citizens during the “Battle of the Bulge” along with the history of Regiment and the relationship between the Veterans and the filmmaker.
I look forward to sharing this film with the citizens of Diekirch as “The Battle of the Bulge” was a significant part of this Regiment’s history while fighting in the European Theatre.
I have also suggested that I bring a few Pal VHS versions of the film to be used in a raffle drawing to assist in the fundraising efforts.
